Storefront Church Shares Chilling New Song “The Gift”: Stream

Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Lukas Frank, aka Storefront Church, makes the kind of rock music that blurs the line between dark hymn, brooding folk, and gothic/alt-rock. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s settled in with new label home Sargent House, known for acts like Chelsea Wolfe, Daughters, and Deafheaven. To celebrate the signing, Storefront Church is sharing his debut single for the label, “The Gift”. A chilling yet stunning piece, at times both minimal and flushed with lush strings and piano, it sounds like the ideal haunting piece to play in an abandoned church. It’s certainly starker than his past material, with hints of early Yellow House-era Grizzly Bear and James Blake in the mix, but something tells me this could be the calm before the storm — the melodic, ambient intro ...

Fiona Apple Sings the Gershwins’ “Bidin’ My Time” in Pro-Biden Voting PSA: Watch

In a year that has seen many become increasingly vocal about their politics, Fiona Apple has made sure her progressive voice has been heard. She’s marched in support of Black Lives Matter, pledged numerous song royalties to charities, and leant her voice to a video about documenting ICE agents. Now, the Fetch the Bolt Cutters singer has given a playful endorsement to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in a new voting PSA. Posted by her friend/roommate Zelda Hallman on Instagram, the clip sees Apple singing George and Ira Gershwin’s “Biddin’ My Time”, a song from their 1930 musical Girl Crazy. As she sings the ditty, she gives a not-so-subtle nod to Biden by whipping out her “I Voted” sticker right as the chorus hits. With a smile and a nod, she slaps on the sticker like an eye-pat...

Odette Announces New Album Herald, Shares New Song “Dwell”: Stream

Australian art-pop artist Odette has announced a new album called Herald. While it’s not expected to surface until early next year, today she’s giving fans a preview with a new song, “Dwell”. Herald is the follow-up to her 2018 debut To A Stranger, which earned her two nominations at the Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards. For this record, the Sydney-based singer-songwriter once again worked with producer Damian Taylor (Björk, Arcade Fire, The Killers) to help bring her theatrical art-pop to life. Technically, Odette already shared a preview of this album in the form of her April single “Feverbreak” (Feat. Hermitude), which sounded sort of like an avant-garde musical poem. “Dwell” is a lot more mighty and bombastic: a triumphant pop song that falls somewh...

Tim Burton Bringing The Addams Family Back to TV

The Addams Family will soon welcome a very fitting guest: Tim Burton. According to Deadline, the veteran Gothic filmmaker is heading to television for the first time ever for a new live-action adaptation of America’s spookiest family. Sources tell the publication that Burton is negotiating to both executive produce and — get this — possibly direct all episodes of the new reboot. Oh, it gets better: Burton will also be joined by Smallville masterminds Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who will serve as executive producers, head writers, and showrunners of the series. Additional details are scarce if non-existent at the moment, but Deadline states the show would be set in modern times and would instead follow the point of view of young Wednesday Addams. This would certainly give it a YA slant. ...

Kevin Parker Is All of Tame Impala in “Why Won’t They Talk to Me?” Performance Video: Watch

Because of the size and sound of the project, it’s easy to think of Tame Impala as a full band. But really, all of that music stems from the “group’s” mastermind, Kevin Parker. The Australian artist reminds us of this in a new performance video for the Lonerism cut “Why Won’t They Talk to Me?” Filmed for the Adobe MAX creative conference by frequent collaborator Alex Haygarth, the clip finds Parker playing every instrument and even singing backup vocals — all three harmonies. Haygarth shot the thing in an empty floor space, with Parker setting up different instruments in different sections of the room. Using some nifty editing techniques, it ends up looking like the musician really cloned himself to fill out all of Tame Impala’s ranks. Check out the creative performance below. Editors̵...

Brad Pitt Narrates Joe Biden’s Latest Campaign Ad: Watch

Brad Pitt (photo by Michael Muller) and Joe Biden (photo by Phil Roeder via the National Archives and Records Administration) With the election just nine days away, the stars are coming out in full force in support of Joe Biden. Brad Pitt is the latest celebrity to tie himself to the Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign, as he narrates a new ad for Biden. Premiering during Game 4 of the World Series between the Dodgers and Rays on Saturday, the clip leans heavy into Biden’s message of positivity. Over shots of the candidate meeting a range of supporters, Pitt says, “America is a place for everyone – those who chose this county, those who fought for it – some Republicans, some Democrats, and most, somewhere in between.” The actor goes on to talk about how we’re a...

Eddie Van Halen Saluted with Stylophone Cover of “Eruption”: Watch

The passing of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen earlier this month has sparked countless tributes. One of the most unique is a cover of his instrumental classic “Eruption” on a pair of Stylophones. Before getting into the musical tribute, the first question you may have is, “What’s a Stylophone?” And that would be a very good question. A Stylophone is an analog keyboard operated by a stylus. It was invented in the late ’60s, and mostly sold as a children’s toy. However, it did make its way into some notable recordings, including David Bowie’s iconic song “Space Oddity”. The instrument was revived in 2007 by the original inventor Brian Jarvis’ son Ben, and a handful of models have been released since then. That brings us to YouTuber maromaro1337, who posted the unique “Eruption” cover in tribu...

Dolly Parton Is a Literal Angel in Trailer for Netflix’s Christmas on The Square: Watch

Did you know that, legally, Dolly Parton is the only person allowed to celebrate Christmas before Thanksgiving? Queen Kringle is taking full advantage this year, having already released her new album A Holly Dolly Christmas in September. Now, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Dolly Parton’s Christmas on The Square, in which Parton fulfills her destiny and appears as a literal angel. Oh, did we mention it’s also a musical? Because hark, this herald angel can sing. This twist on Charles Dickens stars Christine Baranski as a modern-day Scrooge named Regina Fuller. Ms. Fuller-herself has plans to evict an entire town, and on Christmas Eve no less. Luckily, an angel in rhinestones appears to try and warm her frozen heart. Will Dolly succeed? Yes, definitely — but then again m...

Scott Baio Rips Happy Days Reunion Benefiting Democratic Party

On Sunday night, several cast members of Happy Days will reunite for a virtual event benefiting the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. Unsurprisingly, devout Trump supporter Scott Baio — who played Chachi on the late ’70s sitcom — is not among the scheduled participants, and he isn’t holding back his thoughts on the matter. “I’m not on board, obviously, because I don’t believe in socialism and Marxism,” Baio, 60, said in an interview on Fox News Business this week. “Here’s what I don’t get: To take a show like Happy Days, that represented traditional American values, good morals, a slice of Americana,” Baio added, “and to use that show and those ideals to promote two people in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that condone, encourage and foment rioting and looting is a little bizarre to me.” Baio al...

Sigur Rós have announced the long-awaited release of their orchestral album Odin’s Raven Magic, a white whale for many diehard fans. To celebrate the news, the Icelandic band is sharing lead single “Dvergmál” ahead of the record’s December 4th release. Stream it below. First commissioned by the Reykjavik Arts Festival in 2002, Odin’s Raven Magic is an early piece of Sigur Rós’ catalog that was only ever performed a handful of times over their career. Odin’s Raven Magic builds from Sigur Rós’ roots in orchestral and choral f...

The National’s Matt Berninger Performs “One More Second” on Colbert: Watch

Last week, The National’s Matt Berninger celebrated the release of his debut solo album, Serpentine Prison. To further promote the project, the indie rock frontman performed “essential” track “One More Second” on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday. Accompanied by his backing band, Berninger played from inside a warehouse-type space. Berninger’s signature bellow, pensive and somber, set the tone for the entire appearance, along with the moody blue lighting that blanketed him. Watch the video replay below. In a review of Serpentine Prison for Consequence of Sound, Jordan Blum wrote, “Serpentine Prison isn’t the drastic change of pace that many frontmen create when they do a project outside of their main band, but it does enough to justify i...

Bright Eyes Share Planned Parenthood Benefit Single “Miracle of Life” featuring Phoebe Bridgers: Stream

This weekend, Bright Eyes are set to take part in “Village of Love”, a livestream concert supporting Planned Parenthood. Ahead of Sunday’s virtual event, the band has shared a new, guest-heavy benefit single for the nonprofit called “Miracle of Life”. The song is a dark country mosey, courtesy of drumming from Queens of the Stone Age’s Jon Theodore and bass from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea. Better Oblivion Community Center collaborator Phoebe Bridgers also contributes, her vocals echoing alongside Conor Oberst’s with the unholiness of the lyrics’ narrative. They sing of a couple who try to drive out of state for a legal abortion, only to find themselves forced into a dangerous situation. Of course, the immorality isn’t in their goal, but in the roadblocks in their way. “Lay down on th...
