Marilyn Manson has unveiled a new music video for “DON’T CHASE THE DEAD” starring The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus. “DON’T CHASE THE DEAD” was recently released as the second single from Manson’s latest album, WE ARE CHAOS, which arrived earlier this month. The LP debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking Manson’s eighth consecutive album to land in the Top 10. Reedus, who has played Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead since the beginning of the popular AMC series, co-stars alongside Manson in the cinematic video for “DON’T CHASE THE DEAD”. The clip depicts a heist gone violently wrong, along with scenes of Manson singing the song. Manson discussed “DON’T CHASE THE DEAD” in our recent interview with the singer. He told us that the track is “a very driving song, but whe...
Cartalk is the indie rock project of Los Angeles musician Chuck Moore (they/them), and today they’ve announced their debut album, Pass Like Pollen. You may not know who Cartalk is just yet, but chances are many of your favorite indie artists probably do. The forthcoming record was produced by Sarah Tudzin, a.k.a. Illuminati Hotties, and it features numerous contributions from musicians that have also worked with Lucy Dacus, Vagabon, Runnner, and more. Collin Pastore (boygenius, Julien Baker) mixed the record, and it was mastered by Jett Galindo (Neil Young, Nile Rodgers) at the LA institution The Bakery. Those are some pretty tall endorsements for a debut album, but Moore’s songwriting exceeds the hype. Four of the album’s nine songs, including today’s “Las Manos”, have tri...
September is National Deaf Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to drop the first trailer for Sound of Metal. The movie stars Riz Ahmed as Ruben, a drummer whose entire identity is thrown into question when he loses his hearing. A recovering heroin addict, Ruben drums behind his girlfriend, Lou (Olivia Cooke) in a two-piece punk-metal act. The pair are enjoying life on the road in their Airstream until years of pounding the kit takes its toll on Ruben’s hearing. Lou finds him a sober living home for the deaf, where he begins to grapple with his new reality and what it means for the life of music he’s always known. Sound of Metal marks the directorial debut of Darius Marder, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Abraham. Marder is best known as the co-writer of the 2012...
Saturday Night Live will return on October 3rd with its first new live episode since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic last March. Such a momentous occasion calls for an equally momentous host, so Lorne Michaels has called upon former SNL cast member Chris Rock. Since departing the show in 1993, Rock has only hosted SNL twice — once in 1996, and again in 2014. In recent years, however, he’s made several notable cameos as a guest on episodes hosted by Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and Dave Chappelle. Now, Rock will get once again his own turn at hosting. He’ll be joined by Megan Thee Stallion, who will serve as the evening’s musical guest. The “Savage” rapper will be making her SNL debut. As previously reported, SNL’s entire cast from last season is returning for Season 47. Additionally, ...
Los Angeles-via-Atlanta rapper Malcolm Jamaal Davis, better known by his moniker MadeinTYO, has been not-so-subtly climbing the ranks as one of hip-hop’s most exciting rising artists. While his breakout 2016 mixtape You Are Forgiven captured the attention of rap giants like Travis Scott, it was his debut studio album, 2018’s Sincerely, Tokyo, that proved he was worth keeping an eye on in the long run. Now, MadeinTYO is returning to the spotlight with “Money Up”, his new single featuring Toro y Moi. In just under three minutes, MadeinTYO makes a big splash over a weird, warped beat produced by Toro y Moi. Instead of showing off his speed or narrative abilities, MadeinTYO makes an impression here by rapping about financial security, body positivity, and knowing your worth — topics that he fl...
In a new interview, Richard Patrick pointed to a couple of conversations with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor that both motivated and angered him into forming his own band, Filter. One of those exchanges included Reznor suggesting that Patrick deliver pizza to earn some extra cash. Patrick was a member of Nine Inch Nails from 1989 to 1993, mostly as part of the band’s touring lineup, as his only recorded contribution to NIN was a drone guitar on Pretty Hate Machine’s “Sanctified”. He reminisced about his decision to part ways with NIN during a recent appearance on the Stop! Drop & Talk podcast, co-hosted by Halestorm’s Arejay Hale. “I started in Nine Inch Nails, but then I quit when I was, like, 26,” recalled Patrick. “Nine Inch Nails was the only time I actually had a boss. … [Trent and...
Before the character even makes his big screen debut, John Cena’s Peacemaker from The Suicide Side has been given a TV spinoff. Deadline reports that HBO Max has picked up Peacemaker for an eight-episode, straight-to-series order. Cena will reprise his role, while The Suicide Squad writer-director James Gunn will also make the streaming transition. He’ll write the series and direct a number of episodes, as well as executive produce alongside fellow The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran. Cena will co-executive produce. The series will focus on the origins of Peacemaker, a character said to “love peace so much, he’d kill for it.” More vigilante than hero or villain, he was created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette for Charlton Comics before eventually being acquired by DC Comics. The original Pe...
In our new music feature Origins, we give artists the opportunity to delve into the backstory of their latest single. Today, Emile Mosseri tells us about the making of his original soundtrack for Miranda July’s Kajillionaire. In addition to colorful characters and engaging story arcs, a good chunk of what makes a Miranda July film so alluring is its music. That’s certainly the case for Kajillionaire, a comedy-drama about a family of con-artists and July’s “most coherent and story-driven effort to date.” After premiering at Sundance earlier this year to rave reviews, the film is due out later this week and comes with an original soundtrack beautifully crafted by composer and pianist Emile Mosseri. Known for his work on The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Homecoming Season...
Disney has returned with more re-programming woes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Mouse House is pushing back both Black Widow and West Side Story way, way into 2021 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Scarlett Johansson’s blockbuster will go from November 6th to May 7th, 2021. If you’re keeping tabs, that’s more than a full year removed from its pre-Covid release date of May 1st, 2020. Because of this, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is moving from May 7th to July 9th, 2021, while The Eternals will shift from February to November 5th, 2021. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is officially out of this year’s Oscar race. 20th Century and Amblin’s remake of the iconic musical is being delayed an entire year, going from December 18th, 2020 to December 1...
Dave Chappelle and David Letterman on Season 3 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction Pull up a chair because David Letterman’s Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is returning next month for its third season. Set to premiere October 21st, the new season will feature only four episodes — down from the usual six — but the expected star power should more than make up for the abbreviated run. Letterman is set to conduct illuminating hour-long interviews with Kim Kardashian and Dave Chappelle, as well as with Robert Downey Jr., and Lizzo. Season 1 of the Emmy-nominated TV series hosted prominent folks like former president Barack Obama, JAY-Z, and George Clooney. In our review of that season, we praised Letterman for revealing a “different side of himself,” one that’s “m...
Electronic producer Bonobo has teamed up with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to share the new song “Heartbreak”. It’s the first release on Bonobo’s just-founded record label OUTLIER, and will be available as a 12-inch on November 13th. Bonobo, aka Simon Green, has been relatively quiet the last three years, ever since dropping 2017’s Migration and the related Koyo Ganda EP. But last year he announced the OUTLIER live performance series, and now that impulse has led to a new imprint on Ninja Tune. In a statement, he said that “Heartbreak” was “the track that became the catalyst to start the label. One for the dance floors in a time when they’re dearly missed.” “Heartbreak” pays homage to the New York dance scene of the 1970s and ’80s, when disco ruled, and everyone returned from th...
Maybe this is the 5G microchip in my brain talking, but it sure seems like Ian Brown had a massive meltdown on Twitter yesterday over coordinated coronavirus responses. The former singer of The Stone Roses asserted that the ongoing pandemic is actually “plandemic” with the evil goal making us all “digital slaves.” To support his views, the Manchester rocker shared the new pro-conspiracy anthem “Little Seed Big Tree”. In one all-caps tweet, Brown summed up his views as “NO LOCKDOWN NO TESTS NO TRACKS NO MASKS NO VAX.” The reason, he explained, is that he believes the coronavirus pandemic is part of a vast conspiracy — a “plandemic,” if you will — to control the population. He wrote, “THE GREAT RESET the plandemic planned designed and executed to make us digital slaves.” He included the hash...
