It’s important not to forget where we came from—a tenet not lost on ODESZA. When they released The Last Goodbye, their stunning fourth album, ODESZA’s Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight painted the final brushstroke of a deeply personal mosaic of their lives. By interpolating unearthed childhood recordings throughout the album, they enabled fans to peer through an intimate window into their youth. The Last Goodbye effectively serves as a memento of Mills’ and Knight’s formative years. But who exactly were they in the aftermath, in those last vestiges before the formation of ODESZA? Harrison Mills (L) and Clayton Knight (R) of ODESZA. Avi Loud They were unheralded electronic music producers cutting their teeth on SoundCloud during its golden years,...
Fresh off the MTV Video Music Awards stage, 22-year-old Flo Milli, born Tamia Monique Carter, is at the top of her game. To some, the Alabama-bred artist is a TikTok sound-master. If you’ve scrolled through your For You Page recently, there’s no doubt you’ve heard her viral bops in the backdrop. To others, the “Conceited” vocalist is a clever collaborator, loaning her signature bars to Rae Sremmurd‘s “Community D**k”, Baby Tate’s “I Am” and Rico Nasty’s “Money.” But, in her own words, Flo Milli is “a lot of things: funny, outgoing, confident, very boss and very wise.” “When I first got lit, it was 2020, the middle of the pandemic. There was a lot of pressure because I didn’t know what the future held,” she told Hypebeast, referencing the meteoric rise that followed the drop of her glorious...
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 4 finale of Westworld, “Que Será, Será.”] The 2022 television landscape feels, sometimes, a little bit like the Wild West, as the chaos being experienced by the rest of the world trickles into the business decisions being made by men in Patagonia vests. This is why it’ll be exceptionally ironic if, after consistently keeping viewers on their toes for four seasons, Westworld never gets a chance to bring its cyberpunk Western story to its planned conclusion. The twisty mindfuck of a show, a riff on the 1973 Michael Crichton film created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, wrapped its fourth season this month by literally ending the world — or, at the very least, the end of humanity. Welcome to Fan Chant, a weekly column for K-pop fans, stans, and newbies alike. Each week, I’ll be rolling out interviews, lists, and all kinds of content to keep you in the loop on the latest and greatest from our friends in Seoul and beyond. Also, make sure to subscribe to my companion newsletter! Readers of Fan Chant, you are going to be among the first to hear of a new journey I’ve somehow found myself on. The rumors are true — I’m tiptoeing into my CARAT era. I’m not sure if any other K-pop fans feel this way, but I try very hard to be a casual listener a lot of the time. When it comes to groups I really and truly take the time to dive into — learning names, choosing a bias, etc. — I’m just not sure I have the time for more wonderful people to add to the mix. I’m busy! Advertisement …...
Rian Johnson’s murder mystery Knives Out was one of the best films of 2019, making $311.4 million on a $40 million budget and earning a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 2020 Oscars. Unsurprisingly, then, Johnson is poised to follow it up with a sequel. In fact, Netflix shelled out a cool $450 million to ensure he’d make two. Ahead of Knives Out 2‘s release, we’ve rounded up everything we know about the forthcoming sequel. What Is Knives Out, Again? The first Knives Out film starred Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a detective investigating the death of the patriarch of a wealthy, dysfunctional family. Christopher Plummer portrayed deceased 85-year-old author Harlan Thrombey, while Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Katherine Lan...
East Coast hip-hop royalty descended upon the Midwest as Wu-Tang Clan and Nas kicked off their “NY State of Mind Tour” (grab tickets here) at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis on Tuesday night (August 30th). The house was packed; lawn tickets were being sold for the same price as a 25-ounce Bud Light at the concession stand, and the strategy paid off. If it wasn’t sold out, the turnout had to have been close to the venue’s 20,000 capacity. Given that the tour’s namesake is derived from Nas’ legendary Illmatic track, nostalgia was the evening’s leitmotif. The night would lean heavily on material from Nas and Wu-Tang’s classic albums, with both making frequent references to hip-hop’s golden age and those who were there to live it. “Who here had a hip-hop album on cassette tape?”...
In a 2017 Rolling Stone profile, comedian Nathan Fielder discussed researching Asperger’s syndrome to shape his character on the popular Comedy Central program Nathan For You. Although Fielder did not disclose that he personally identifies on the autism spectrum, his latest project — HBO’s fascinating and deceptively moving docu-comedy The Rehearsal — reflects an experience that many autistic individuals such as myself have dealt with: masking, a survival mechanism in which autistic individuals suppress their neurodivergent traits in order to adapt to their surroundings. The Rehearsal initially follows Fielder helping people practice difficult conversations and momentous life events by designing intricate simulations for them. To do this, he hires actors to inhabit these sets, and crafts d...
