Tarantino on No Michelle Yeoh in Kill Bill: “Who Would Believe Uma Thurman Could Kick Your Ass?”

Quentin Tarantino has been frank about finding inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill from Michelle Yeoh’s performance in Jackie Chan’s 1992 comedy, Police Story 3. So why didn’t he cast Yeoh in his film? “I asked Quentin the same question,” Yeoh said in a new interview with Town & Country. “He’s very smart. He said, ‘Who would believe that Uma Thurman could kick your ass?’ ” While they’ve never worked together, Tarantino and Yeoh are friends, and she credits the director with convincing her to come out of retirement after her terrifying fall from a bridge on the set of 1996’s The Stunt Woman. She broke several vertebrae. “I thought I broke my back. I thought I was paralyzed,” she explained. Every breath was agony. Tarantino was in Hong ...

Earlier this week, the Academy issued a formal apology to Sacheen Littlefeather for her treatment at the 1973 Oscars, where she declined Marlon Brando’s award for Best Actor. As president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee, Littlefeather endured racist mockery and threats of arrest and violence when she appeared on Brando’s behalf to protest the mistreatment of American Indians in the film industry. In a new interview published to the Academy’s website, Littlefeather detailed how John Wayne attempted to confront her in the aftermath of her speech. “[John Wayne] did not like what I was saying up at the podium,” Littlefeather recalled. “So, he came forth in a rage to physically assault and take me off the stage. And he had to be restrained by six security men in orde...

Zac Efron Has More Beer Than Brains in Trailer for The Greatest Beer Run Ever: Watch

The Vietnam War was not known for an excess of intellectualism, and Zac Efron’s character definitely has more beer than brains in the new trailer for The Greatest Beer Run Ever. It premieres September 30th in theaters and on Apple TV+. This retelling of a true story stars Efron as John “Chickie” Donohue, a Marine Corps veteran who in 1967 decided to support the troops in Vietnam by bringing them some well-shaken lukewarm brewskies. The trailer shows the moment of inspiration inebriation when he reached the decision in a bar in New York. As anti-war protestors march across a black-and-white television, the barkeep, played by Bill Murray, moans, “Do these protestors not know that our soldiers see that on TV? I’d like to go over to Vietnam, track down all the boys from the neighborhood, ...

Robert De Niro’s 10 Best Performances

Top Performances is a recurring feature in which we definitively handpick the very best performances from an iconic actor or actress. This has been updated on the occasion of Robert De Niro’s birthday. It’s not that we’d ever refer to many of Robert De Niro’s best roles as “vulnerable” in and of themselves. The legendary actor is one of the all-time great performers of tough guys, in their many forms, and there’s a ferocity to many of his early turns that’s gone nearly unparalleled in the years since. Yet one of the significant aspects of De Niro’s genius as an actor is the way in which he’s been able to build a long career out of playing on the earlier performances he’s delivered, whether it’s in adding new shades to the plethora of gangsters and fallen icons he’s portrayed for Martin Sco...
