Sometimes I feel bad for the Predator. Of the two major sci-fi creature-feature franchises Fox popularized in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, the Aliens have had much better luck with both critics and audiences. But the Predator series has long felt like it’s struggled to keep up with the mastery of the original 1987 John McTiernan thriller. In the ensuing 35 years since the first film came out, there have been four direct sequels and two spinoffs (in which they square off against their xenomorph cousins), and hardly any of them have had the rapturous reception of the first one. The recent merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery has already transformed the entertainment industry. As the companies’ streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, combine, HBO Max has canceled a slew of its original series, and on August 2nd, Warner Bros. shelved its planned Batgirl film despite the $90 million project already being filmed. HBO Max had originally planned to introduce a slew of streaming-exclusive DC Extended Universe films, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav opted to kill Batgirl and take the tax write-off instead. James Franco to Play Fidel Castro in New Film Alina of Cuba
James Franco will portray Fidel Castro in an upcoming film called Alina of Cuba, Variety reports. The film centers on Alina Fernandez (Ana Villafañe), the illegitimate daughter Castro had with Cuban socialite Natalia Revuelta (Mía Maestro). Alina of Cuba follows Fernandez’s life as a critic of Castro’s regime. Fernandez, who is serving as an on-set creative and biographical consultant to the film, supported Franco’s casting as her father. The movie is directed by Miguel Bardem and written by Jose Rivera and Nilo Cruz, and is slated to begin filming in Colombia on August 15th. Joker: Folie à Deux Receives Fall 2024 Release Date
Todd Phillips’ Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie à Deux, has received a release date. It will be out on October 4th, 2024, according to a report from Deadline. Phillips confirmed Joker 2 in June by sharing a photo of the script along with a shot of Joaquin Phoenix reading the draft. Just like the original 2019 film, it was penned by Phillips and Scott Silver. Folie à Deux translates to “shared madness” in French, and it could be indeed just that. The Batgirl film set to star Leslie Grace, Michael Keaton, and Brendan Fraser has been scrapped by Warner Bros. Discovery, The Wrap reports. Prime Video has greenlit a remake of the classic 1989 film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It will be directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), with Joel Silver returning as producer after serving in the same role for the original.
