Activision Blizzard has canceled its World of Warcraft mobile game, Bloomberg reported. The project had reportedly been in development for three years but was ultimately shelved due to a dispute regarding financing between Blizzard and its Chinese publishing partner, NetEase. “The two companies disagreed over terms and ultimately called a halt to the project, which had been kept under wraps,” a source close to the deal told Bloomberg. The game was reportedly codenamed “Neptune” and was intended to be a Warcraft spinoff, taking place during a different time period than the main title. Gamers in the United States have spent less in Q2 2022 as compared to the year before. According to The Verge, market research firm NPD stated that spending on video games fell by $1.78 billion USD in Q2, with overall spending totalling to only $12.35 billion USD — 13% lower year over year. According to new reports, Xbox‘s parent company made a filing with New Zealand’s Commerce Commission stating that the company doesn’t produce any titles that Microsoft finds particularly attractive or necessary. “There is nothing unique about the video games developed and published by Activision Blizzard that is a ‘must have’ for rival PC and console video game distributors that give rise to a foreclosure concern,” the filing wrote.
