Vulnerabilities in Windows and Chrome Used in Series of Highly Targetted Attacks

In April, Kaspersky experts discovered a number of highly targeted attacks against multiple companies utilising a previously undiscovered chain of Google Chrome and Microsoft Windows zero-day exploits. One of the exploits was used for remote code execution in the Chrome web browser, while the other was an elevation of privilege exploit fine-tuned to target the latest and most prominent builds of Windows 10. The latter exploits two vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows OS kernel: Information Disclosure vulnerability CVE-2021-31955 and Elevation of Privilege vulnerability CVE-2021-31956. Microsoft has patched both today as part of Patch Tuesday. Zero-Day Attacks Recent months have seen a wave of advanced threat activity exploiting zero-days on the internet. Google Launches Live Caption Feature for Chrome Users

Image sourced from Pymnts Google has rolled out its Live Caption feature for Chrome browser users. The feature was initially only available on the Pixel 2 and then to selected Android devices. But now, XDA has revealed that the feature is finally going live on the stable Chrome 89. Live Caption provides users with real-time captions for audio – like videos, podcasts, phone calls, video calls, and audio messages – even content they record themselves. All captions are processed locally, never stored, and never leave the device. To enable Live Captions, Chrome 89 users should go to Settings > Advanced > Accessibility – users may also need to download speech recognition files. “For now, it only detects and transcribes English-language audio, but hopefully, support for more languages will...

Google Unveils Chrome’s Latest Update

Google has unpacked its latest Chrome update which it says is the “largest gain in Chrome performance in years”. Chrome’s director of product, Matt Waddell says this will be Google’s final update of 2020 – to help users “get things done this holiday season (and beyond)”. Here’s a closer look at these improvements: Chrome now prioritizes users active tabs vs. everything that’s open—reducing CPU usage by up to 5x and extending battery life by up to 1.25 hours (based on our internal benchmarks). Chrome now starts up to 25 percent faster, loads pages up to 7 percent faster, and does all of this using less power and RAM than before. Chrome on Android now loads pages near instantaneously when users navigate backward and forward, making these common tasks...

Google could be Testing Dark Mode for Chrome OS

Image sourced from Android Police Google is testing dark mode for Chrome OS, according to AndroidCentral. If the feature is released, Chrome OS users would be able to join the ranks of Windows and macOS users. “Dark mode has been in high demand for any OS over the past few years for its benefits on eye strain and general readability,” reads a report from Android Central. “[And] although the feature isn’t fully ready and definitely has some bugs to squash, it already works on the Chrome browser and a bunch of different system web apps. The dark theme already seems to be a pretty comprehensive feature so far as it not only applies to the app backgrounds but seems to apply to other UI elements as well.” There’s no word yet on when (or if) Google will unveil this feature. /* custom css */...

Google to Warn Users if their Passwords are Hacked

Sourced from IOL. Google has revealed that it would notify Chrome users if their passwords have been compromised. In an official blog post, the tech company said that it would be improving password security on both Android and iOS devices. To find out whether your passwords have been compromised, Chrome will send users a copy of their usernames and Passwords using a special form of encryption – this lets Google check them against lists of credentials known to be compromised, but “Google cannot derive your username or password from this encrypted copy”. “We notify you when you have compromised passwords on websites, but it can be time-consuming to go find the relevant form to change your password. To help, we’re adding support for “.well-known/change-password” URLs that let Chrome take user...

Google Chrome Update expected to make Tabs Load 10% Faster

Sourced from Forbes. Google has revealed that it would be introducing a number of improvements to Chrome, “including tabs that load faster and new features that let users organize and find them easily.” “These days, people are spending a lot of time in their browsers to get things done, whether for work, school or something else,” says Google in an official blog post. “And while some write out a formal to-do list to keep track of tasks, for others, their to-do list is their tabs in Chrome. However you get things done, we want Chrome to help you be more productive.” Here’s a closer look at Google Chrome’s improvements: /* custom css */ .tdi_3_f4f.td-a-rec-img{ text-align: left; }.tdi_3_f4f.td-a-rec-img img{ margin: 0 auto 0 0; } Users can expect tabs to load 10 per cent faster Chrome users ...

Google Chrome Users May Have Been Effected by a Spying Campaign, According to Report

Sourced from Forbes. Google Chrome extensions downloaded more than 32-million times were used to spy on the popular browser’s users in a massive global surveillance campaign, according to a new report. The report, published by cybersecurity firm Awake Security, found at least 111 “malicious or fake” Chrome extensions capable of taking screenshots, stealing login credentials and capturing passwords as users typed them. This spying campaign impacted a wide range of sectors across the web including financial services, healthcare and government organizations, the firm adds. Browser extensions, such as the ones for Chrome allow users to add a myriad of new features previously unavailable to them. Extensions such as Netflix Party and Suspicious Site Reporter are examples of popular extensions. A...

Google Rolls Out Game-Changing Update to Chrome

Sourced from Forbes. Google is rolling out tabbed grouping for Google Chrome. The update aims to address the problem of working with larger numbers of tabs at once. The new feature makes it possible to group related tabs together and treat them as a single entity for ease of navigation and management. The company is already in the process of upgrading the feature with new options; collapsible tab groups are now available to test in the Canary build of Chrome 85. If you have already experimented with tab groups, users will almost certainly have noticed that when tabs are grouped together they actually end up taking up more space than before because of the label you assign to them. In response to that, Google has come up with a simple solution which should perhaps have been included right fr...
