Artemis Fowl Isn’t Worth 94 Minutes of Your Life: Review

The Pitch: After years in development hell, Disney is unveiling its attempt at a new franchise with the adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s first Artemis Fowl novel. With a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Josh Gad, and Dame Judi Dench, and esteemed director Kenneth Branagh behind the camera, what could go wrong? What Went Wrong: Well, just about everything. The one mercy of Artemis Fowl is that it’s short, clocking in at just 94 minutes including its end credits. Unfortunately, that gives Branagh and credited screenwriters Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl plenty of time to create confusing character motivations, half-assed attempts at emotional gravitas, and stabs at humor that are best left unsaid or unseen. For those of us who haven’t read the Colfer books, Artemis Fowl fails to tell its most...

Lord of the Rings Cast to Reunite for YouTube Livestream

Everybody is keeping in touch with old friends these days. As it turns out, so are some fellas from Middle Earth. This Sunday, the cast of The Lord of the Rings will reunite for a special livestream — because apparently Gollum’s nonstop reading of The Hobbit was only the beginning. The epic reunion is the latest installment in Josh Gad’s ongoing series “Reunited Apart”, which has already brought together the cast of The Goonies and Back to the Future during this period of self-isolation. In a teaser clip, Gad geeks out to Astin in an attempt to bring The Lord of the Rings family back together. “I was wondering what you might think about tracking down a certain group of buddies, comrades, pals,” says Gad. “Oh, what’s another word for it? Fellowship?” Astin protests, but event...

Loren Bouchard’s Central Park Struggles to Hit the Right Notes for Apple TV: Review

The Pitch: Apple TV+ has been searching for a big show to serve as its first hit, since unveiling the streaming service last November. Could it be Central Park, a half-hour animated musical comedy from the creator of Bob’s Burgers and featuring a massive voice cast including Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Stanley Tucci, Daveed Diggs, and Leslie Odom, Jr.? The streaming service’s metaphorical fingers are tightly crossed. Breaking Into Song: Any fan of the Fox animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers knows that the show isn’t shy about having its characters break into song, or about having music be an overall major part of its wacky hijinks in a seaside town where the eponymous restaurant resides. The Belcher family is very, very weird: there’s burger chef Bob, his gleeful wife Linda, his boy-obsessed teenage...

Director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter Bob Gale, “The Power of Love” songwriter Huey Lewis, and composer Alan Silvestri also joined. Even recent Star Wars director and longtime Back to the Future fan J.J. Abrams hopped on the stream to participate in the festivities. Editors’ Picks As with Gad’s Goonies reunion, the Back to the Future v...

Josh Gad to Reunite Cast of Back to the Future For YouTube Livestream

For the first installment of his “Reunited Apart” video series, Josh Gad brought together all our favorite characters from The Goonies. Now, the Frozen actor is set to reunite the iconic cast of Back to the Future. Gad previewed his exciting plans on social media on Tuesday, posting a Zoom call screenshot featuring Marty McFly himself, Michael J. Fox, and Doc Brown, aka Christopher Lloyd. Eight other participants are scheduled to appear in the reunion livestream, but Gad made sure to keep their identities a mystery. “Oops. Accidentally marked up this picture featuring all of the surprise guests we’ve assembled for next Monday’s #BackToTheFuture #ReunitedApart reunion,” The Book of Mormon star wrote on Instagram. Could the unknown folks be director Robert Zemeckis? Marty’s mo...
