Court remands man for ‘abducting’, ‘defiling’ 17-year-old girl
An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that a 26-year-old man, Sixtus Chinedu, who allegedly abducted and defiled a 17-year-old girl should be remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre. The police charged Chinedu, who resides at No. 6, Ijaye Road, Ogba, Lagos State, with abduction, rape and unlawful sexual intercourse. Magistrate M.O. Tanimola, gave the order, following a motion moved by the Prosecutor, ASP Victor Eruada, that the matter be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. The magistrate, who did not take the plea of Chinedu, also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice. She adjourned the case untill Aug. 12 . Two security guards arraigned for ‘stealing’ N5 million drugs
Two security guards, Ali Mohammed, 35 and Mohammed Abdullahi, 25, were on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing drugs valued at N5 million. The defendants, who reside in Oshodi, Lagos State, are being tried on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Olasunkanmi Adejumola, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 28, at Adewale Crescent, Oshodi, Lagos state. Seven Indians, Nigerians docked for ‘cocaine importation’
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday arraigned seven Indians and three Nigerians before the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court for allegedly smuggling 43.1 kilogrammes of cocaine into the country. The Indians include Shedrack Yurama; Singh Vikash; Kunnaserypallam Ashraf Inzam; Xaiver Fernando Santhanaria; Mandal Surjeet Ashok; Tandel Pratikkumar Pravinbai; and Barthwal Rohan Sunil. Their Nigerian alleged accomplices are Tobi Ojo; Kunle Animashaun and Omozusi Enorose Terry. Also arraigned before the court alongside the defendants was a limited liability company, Oilways Logistics and Energy Limited. Yoruba Nation: Police arrest, teargas protesters in Lagos
The Ojota venue of the Yoruba Nation rally has turned rowdy as police teargassed and also shot in the air to disperse protesters. Police also sprayed water cannon on the protesters to forestall the breakdown of order. Newsmen observed that more security operatives including men of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and their vans have been deployed to the venue of the protest. Lagos court remands 13-year old boy for ‘defiling’ 11-year old girl
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Friday remanded a 13-year-old boy (name withheld) in a correctional home, for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl. The Magistrate, Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take the juvenile’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. She adjourned the case until August 17 pending legal advice from the DPP’s office. The Prosecution Counsel, Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in March at his residence. He said that the defendant unlawfully had sexual intercourse with the girl. The Lagos State House of Assembly has organised a public hearing on a bill to establish an organ harvest transplantation department in the state Ministry of Health. The Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, Mr Hakeem Sokunle, made the disclosure at one-day public hearing on Organ Harvest and Transplantation Bill on Wednesday in Lagos. Sokunle explained that the department was to advise the state government on all matters relating to organ harvest, transplantation and preservation. Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has appointed Kehinde Osinaike as the General Manager of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA). Osinaike’s appointment contained in a letter LGS/HOS/178/Vol.X/30 issued on Friday by the Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, takes immediate effect. Muri-Okunola said the appointment was in cognisance of his impressive track records. According to him, Sonaike succeeds the former General Manager of the authority, Funmi Osifuye, upon retirement. Police arrest school proprietor for ‘sexually harassing’ 14-year-old
The police in Lagos have arrested one Emmanuel Madueke, the 62-year-old proprietor of Megland Comprehensive School, Lekki, for allegedly sexually assaulting and harassing a 14-year-old student of his school. This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT). It stated that the proprietor sexually harassed the student on the day schools celebrated Children’s Day. Lagos begins plea bargain session for Kirikiri inmates
In an effort to decongest correctional centres, the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on Thursday held a plea bargain session for some inmates at the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre. The plea bargain session was the first of its kind to be held at a correctional centre in Lagos State. Newsmen reports that the previous practice was for counsel to incarcerated inmates to write to the Attorney-General of the state to consider plea bargain agreements for their clients. A total of 27 inmates – 16 males and 11 females – were beneficiaries of Thursday’s plea bargain session.
