‘Patriots rule Hong Kong’ as sweeping pro-Beijing electoral rules passed

Hong Kong’s legislature approved the biggest overhaul of its political system in the quarter century since British rule on Thursday, in a decisive step to assert Beijing’s authority over the autonomous city. The changes will reduce the proportion of seats in the legislature that are filled by direct elections from half to less than a quarter. A new body will be empowered to vet candidates and bar those deemed insufficiently patriotic towards China from standing. “These 600-or-so pages of the legislation come down to just a few words: patriots ruling Hong Kong,” said Peter Shiu, a pro-Beijing lawmaker. Most of the changes were announced by China in March, though Hong Kong authorities later contributed further details, such as redrawing constituency boundaries and criminalising calls for bal...

<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-09T15:30:34+00:00“>April 9, 2021 | 11:30am ET A visceral clip of Motörhead performing “Rock It” in 2012 has been unleashed ahead of the band’s upcoming live album and concert film, Louder Than Noise… Live in Berlin. It documents the band’s 2012 performance at the Berlin Velodrom. The song hails from the Motörhead’s 1983 album Another Perfect Day, a slightly more melodic excursion for the heavy rockers. “Rock It” sounded as strong as ever in 2012, opening with an impressive drum roll from Mikkey Dee before Lemmy Kilmister and guitarist Phil Campbell take it away. The German crowd, always receptive to a Motörhead show, loses it when the guitars kick in. Lemmy’s face remains semi-ob...

Traffic in Suez Canal resumes after stranded ship refloated

Shipping traffic through Egypt’s Suez Canal resumed on Monday after a giant container ship which had been blocking the busy waterway for almost a week was refloated, the canal authority said. The 400-metre (430-yard) long Ever Given became jammed diagonally across a southern section of the canal in high winds early last Tuesday, halting traffic on the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia. Live footage on a local television station showed the ship surrounded by tug boats moving slowly in the centre of the canal on Monday afternoon. The station, ExtraNews, said the ship was moving at a speed of 1.5 knots. “Admiral Osama Rabie, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announces the resumption of maritime traffic in the Suez Canal after the Authority successfully rescues and ...

The Once-Called “Herd Immunity Fest” Happened and Here’s What Went Down: Video + Photos

The once-named “Herd Immunity Fest” made national headlines when it was announced last month, and now the three-day rock gathering is in the books. The festival took place Thursday (July 16th) through Saturday (July 18th) outside the Q&Z Expo Center in Ringle, Wisconsin, and a smattering of social media posts and YouTube clips offer a glimpse of what it looked like. The “Herd Immunity Fest” faced backlash when it was first announced in late June, not only for its name but for the fact that it was going to be staged in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite organizers quickly renaming the event the “July Mini Fest”, a handful of bands dropped off the bill, including Nonpoint, Royal Bliss, Kaleido, and Blacktop Mojo. Things looked sketchy this past week when organizers reached out t...
