Lava La Rue’s Big Year: How the U.K. Indie Upstart Rendered Their Artistic Vision in ‘Hi-Fidelity’

As 2022 draws to a close, Billboard Pride is taking a look back at some of the queer indie artists who saw their stars rise over the last 12 months. Below, U.K. genre-bender Lava La Rue breaks down their big year. It’s the end of a busy trip to New York for Lava La Rue. The buzzy, much talked-about indie artist from West London has been in and out of studio sessions and supporting their partner’s gigs around the city, but as they log onto a Zoom call from a Brooklyn hotel room, they look mildly bummed. “It’s super rainy and gross,” they say, swiveling their camera around to show a cloud-choked skyline just outside their window. “Normally I get this very cute view of everything corny, like the Empire State. Now, it’s just kind of looking like Gotham.” But ...

Feid’s ‘Normal,’ Rosalía’s ‘Saoko’ & More: Vote for the Best Latin Song of 2022

The songs that soundtracked our year were genre-blurring, empowering, hooky and game-changers in their own way. As the year comes to an end, Billboard unveiled the staff picks for the best 25 Latin songs of 2022. Now, it’s time to vote for your favorite song. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news The wide-ranging list includes obvious hits such as Bad Bunny‘s “Titi Me Preguntó,” Manuel Turizo‘s “La Bachata” and Grupo Frontera‘s “No Se Va,” but it also includes songs that weren’t outright hits but are truly great songs deserving of a mention on the year-end round-up. Such was the case with Alex Anwandter‘s unapologetic disco-pop anthem “Maricoteca.” The Chilean singer-songwriter presented a risky NSFW statement, where spectators witness the singer-pro...

Hit-Boy Teases More Music Before End of 2022

To say that Hit-Boy has had a busy year would be an understatement. The prolific producer put out King’s Disease III, the third installment in his ongoing LP series with Nas, in November, along with collaborations with The Game, Big Sean and more. He also served as the main producer behind Pacman Da Gunman’s Bulletproof Soul and Dreezy’s HITGIRL. Despite the impressive output of music he’s dropped so far, it seems that Hit-Boy has more up his sleeve before the year comes to an end. The producer has revealed that he has another project — either a song or full-length record — coming out later this week. “I got more to say this year 12/30,” he wrote in the caption to a photo of him standing at a podium, ready to make a speech. Fans will only have to wait a few days to hear the new music from ...

Ranking Every Ozzy Osbourne Solo Album from Worst to Best

Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog, a director’s filmography, or some other critical pop-culture collection in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. This time, we follow Ozzy Osbourne’s solo career from the masterful Blizzard of Ozz to what, for now, remains his last solo disc, 2022’s Patient Number 9. The man born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, on December 3, 1948, didn’t become the Prince of Darkness overnight. First rising to fame as the vocalist for Black Sabbath — the first heavy metal band — Ozzy Osbourne became as notorious for his drinking and drug habits as he was for his singing. Ozzy hit a turning point in his life when touring with Black Sabbath in 1979. His habit was bad, and maybe worse, every night a young, hotshot ba...

Halsey’s 10 Best Songs

There aren’t many self-release success stories quite like that of Halsey. When her original song “Ghost” was released to SoundCloud back in 2014, it instantly began to gain attention. With her very first release, Halsey was already on the map. In the years since, Halsey has become a reliable source of honest lyricism, innovative and creative concept albums, music video and film direction, and a deeply personal form of artistry. Over four full albums — from Badlands to If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power — Halsey has played with genre and self-mythology, constructing and deconstructing narratives as they see fit. It’s hard to narrow down their discography, so diverse in genre, to just ten songs, but we set out to give it a try. Advertisement Check out our list of ten favorite ...

Mining Metal: Top 10 Underground Metal Albums of 2022

I sit here writing this intro essay crouched at a too-small desk, my fiance’s mother’s childhood desk, huddled beneath a blanket in my fiance’s childhood room placing the finishing touches on our list just before Christmas Eve. My body is currently scratched and busted up; I have a bad hematoma on my left arm from elbow to armpit, with deep scratches on that forearm while my left hip and right elbow feel jacked to hell. That is because last night, after bursting out of my apartment door to tell a neighbor to quiet down after they paced screaming at the top of their lungs for over two hours, I found myself locked out of my apartment with my 12-year old dog locked inside. So, I attempted what any grown man left on their own in such a situation would: I attempted to scale my apartment buildin...
