Janelle Monaé is set to portray cabaret singer-turned secret agent and civil rights activist Josephine Baker in A24’s forthcoming television series De La Resistance, Deadline reports. Created and run by Jennifer Yale (Legion, Outlander), De La Resistance follows Baker’s career as a barrier-breaking entertainer and a World War II secret agent for the French Resistance. Born in America but loyal to France, Baker performed at the Folies Bergère in Paris and was the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics. Nathaniel Glover, better known as Kidd Creole from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison stemming from a first degree manslaughter conviction, TMZ reports. Last month, a New York Supreme Court jury found Glover guilty of stabbing an unhoused man to death in August 2017. TMZ reports that in addition to the 16-year sentence, Glover will face five years of post-release supervision. Glover was arrested and indicted in 2017 after stabbing a 55-year old man named John Jolly, who was unhoused and unacquainted with Glover. Thundercat will embark on an expansive North American tour this summer. He’ll kick things off July 23 in Denver, Colorado, and stop off in Las Vegas, Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, and many other cities before wrapping things up at Format Festival in Bentonville, Arkansas on September 25. Janelle Monáe has been tapped to play jazz icon Josephine Baker in a forthcoming television series from A24, Deadline reports. The show, titled De La Resistance, will center on Baker’s work as a world renowned jazz performer—and also her role as as a spy for the Allies during the French resistance in World War II. Jennifer Yale, who has worked on series such as See, Outlander, and Underground, is the creator and showrunner of De La Resistance. In addition to landing the lead role, Monáe will produce the series via her own Wondaland Pictures.
