Aziz Ansari is jumping from TV to the silver screen. The actor and Master of None co-creator is making his directorial debut with an as-yet untitled Searchlight Pictures, and he’s tapped Bill Murray to star in the lead role. Ansari will have lots on his plate for this project: In addition to directing, he’s writing the script, co-producing alongside Youree Henley, and acting in it. The project is based on American surgeon and New Yorker contributor Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, a 2014 nonfiction book about aging, end-of-life care, and striving for wellbeing over survival. Though not much is known right now about the film’s plot, Searchlight is banking on both Ansari and Murray’s background in comedy to help sell this examination of mortality. ...
It was family business for the cast and crew behind jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy at Sound of Brazil (S.O.B.’s) in New York City on Monday, February 21st. Over two hours, a panel of artists featured in the documentary, led by the project’s braintrust Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, gathered to share their memories beyond the film, full-circle moments, and the lasting impact of Ye on their careers now. QR codes lined the walls with offers for an exclusive $225 hoodie that commemorated both the documentary’s release and S.O.B.’s 40th anniversary this year. The merch was only for sale that night. Producer Mura Masa has recruited rapper Lil Uzi Vert and recent collaborators PinkPantheress and Shygirl for “bbycakes,” a new single drawing from an eclectic mix of influences including hip-hop, hyperpop, drill, UK garage, and drum and bass. Shygirl and Uzi open “bbycakes” by interpolating the chorus from the chart-topping 2004 single “Baby Cakes” by British garage trio 3 of a Kind. “We’ll take it step-by-step because I’m not somethin’ you own,” Shygirl sings. Uzi continues by describing a relationship gone sour (“My time is almost up, and I just gotta go”), followed by Rising Artist to Watch PinkPantheress defending her actions. “I know I messed up when I was seeing your best friend,” she admits. “But when we’re fighting/ You’re not my boyfriend.” Advertisement Related Video “I feel...
Mura Masa joined forces with Lil Uzi Vert, PinkPantheress and Shygirl for his brand new single, “bbycakes.” Clocking in at just under three minutes, the cut interpolates a 3 Of a Kind garage classic and further teases Mura Masa’s upcoming third album. “bbycakes” follows the 2021 surprise track “2gether” and is the first track Mura Masa started working on following the halt of his global R.Y.C. tour. “I feel like ‘bbycakes is a future facing record. Clashing U.K. with U.S., hard drill music with cute U.K. garage culture, underground with overground,” a press release reads. “Most of all it’s a mission statement for the vicarious and playful nature that I think popular music needs to be looking to in order to soundtrack those crucial moments of fun and hedonism in an increasingly cynical cult...
