With his 2,141 SoundCloud followers, veteran U.K. psychedelic-music producer Darren Sangita didn’t exactly wound Spotify when he pulled his music from the streaming service last month. “I’m a zed-list music celebrity,” he says. But he couldn’t support a company whose founder, Daniel Ek, invested more than $114 million in Helsing, a European security startup that manufactures artificial-intelligence software to “keep liberal democracies from harm.” “The circumstantial evidence points to a massive investment in military/AI tech,” says Sangita, who runs indie label Sangita Sounds. “I was just enormously disappointed. Are there not any other alternatives that Mr. Ek could have possibly thought about investing in to make the world...

God bless rock and roll: Pope Francis made a rare unofficial visit outside the Vatican last week, dropping in at the Roman record store Stereosound. As The Telegraph reports, he left with a mystery CD, and the owners are refusing to say what it was. The Pope is both the head of the Catholic church and the sovereign of Vatican City, and between his roles as a religious and political leader, he has a strictly regimented schedule. Dropping unannounced at a small shop is as uncommon for him as it would be for the US President. It’s so rare, in fact, that other such visits have become low-key legendary, including a change of glasses at an optician in 2015, and a journey to buy orthopedic shoes in 2016. But he used to be quite the record rat, according to Tiziana Esposito, one of the o...
Electronic musician Bogdan Raczynski has announced the new album Addle, which gets released March 18 via Planet Mu. The record follows 2019’s Rave ’Till You Cry and the 2007 studio album Alright! Below, listen to two entries from the album, “Ladde” and “Dleda.” “Calm is great,” Raczynski remarked in a press statement. “You need to take a breather in the eye of the storm now and then. But the real growth happens in turbulence, when your feelings oscillate in and out of sync. It’s not dry land you’re after. You’re trying to build a new island while on a piddly raft. Beleaguered and weary you lay the foundation with your bare hands while the rain lashes your back; a new place for you and yours to moor yourself to until the next storm hits. Addle is about that storm, its adjacent periphery, an...

Vocalist Dani “Filth” Davey of veteran British extreme metallers CRADLE OF FILTH recently spoke to HeavyMetal.dk about how the pandemic affected the making of the band’s new album, “Existence Is Futile”. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “The album was written before the pandemic. The drums, fortunately, were recorded before any lockdown which was, obviously, brilliant because our drummer [Martin ‘Marthus’ Škaroupka] is from the Czech Republic, so he wouldn’t have been able to get over to record. And in fact, [guitarist] Ashok [Marek Šmerda], who’s also from the Czech Republic, didn’t arrive in the studio until five months after Martin. But with the drums down and the fact that we demoed everything very extensive...
George Lynch rejoined DOKKEN on stage on Sunday, January 16 at RokIsland Fest in Key West, Florida to perform three of the band’s classic songs: “Kiss Of Death”, “When Heaven Comes Down” and “Tooth And Nail”. Fan-filmed video footage of his appearance can be seen below. Lynch had previously played the same three songs with DOKKEN on several occasions last summer and fall, including in West Hollywood, California; in Glenside, Pennsylvania; in Waukegan, Illinois; in Ashland, Virginia; in Moline, Illinois; and in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Last March, Lynch was asked in an interview with Jeff Gaudiosi of MisplacedStraws.com if there has been any talk of more shows featuring the reunited classic lineup of DOKKEN. He responded: “I’ve actually be...
