HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Paras Griffin / Getty Ashanti appears to have finally responded to Irv Gotti and his kind of creepy, definitely embarrassing Drink Champs appearance, during which he seemed to pine away for the “Rock Wit U” singer with whom he apparently had a relationship (or affair? crush? “check this box if you like me” situation?) two decades ago. Ashanti had been quiet while Irv continued to self-own by making himself sound like the guy in the romcom who stands out in the rain watching the love of his wife through her bedroom window where she’s enjoying the company of some big, buff guy. But lyrics the “Foolish” singer sang on Diddy’s “Gotta Move On” remix might give off the impression that she’s telling Gotti he needs to chill with the Steve Urkel vibes because she ...

It’s been three long years since we’ve heard from Swinomish, Washington’s Black Belt Eagle Scout, but today, the indie rock project of Katherine Paul returns with the new single “Don’t Give Up.” “Don’t Give Up” is a song of persistence that flits seamlessly between steady moments of calm and roaring cacophonies of shoegaze-inspired guitars. “Slow, important love/ It keeps me alive,” Paul sings in the opening lines. “You wanted a second chance at life/ Well, you’re alive.” The song’s title isn’t quite a pep talk, but a reflection of personal growth: “I don’t give up anymore,” she repeats in the chorus. “Spending time with the land and on the water are ways that strengthen my connection to my ancestors and to my culture,” Paul says of the inspiration behind the track. “It helps heal my spiri...
Though Brendan Fraser is earning Oscar buzz for his portrayal of a 600-pound man named Charlie in The Whale, one of the major criticisms of the Darren Aronofsky film is that the actor had to wear a fat suit to portray his character. In an interview with Variety, the director defended his casting of Fraser instead of an obese actor, saying it was difficult to find someone who could pull off the role from an emotional perspective. Aronofsky also said it became “a crazy chase” to find an actor heavy enough for the role. “There was a chapter in the making of this film where we tried to research obese actors,” Aronofsky told Variety. “Outside of not being able to find an actor who could pull off the emotions of the role, it just becomes a crazy chase. Like, if you can’t find a 600-pound ac...
The Strokes recently recorded a new album in Costa Rica with producer Rick Rubin. Rubin shared the news during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience that went live on Wednesday (October 12th). “A few months ago, I was in Costa Rica recording a new album with The Strokes,” Rubin revealed. “We rented this house on the top of a mountain and set the band up outside. So it’s like, they’re doing a concert for the ocean on the top of a mountain. And we did that everyday — it was incredible. They didn’t want to leave, it was like the best experience.” The as-yet-unannounced album would mark the follow-up to 2020’s The New Abnormal, which was also produced by Rubin. Advertisement Consequence has reached out to The Strokes’ representatives for additional information. Editor’s Note: We recently upda...

Lucrecia Dalt is gleefully cerebral. Over the last decade, the Colombian artist has used her oblique experimental music to ponder metaphysical phenomena and the nature of human consciousness. Dalt has a fondness for philosophical contemplation, and concepts from her training as a geotechnical engineer often creep into her work. On her new album ¡Ay!, she reprises this erudite mode. This time around, the story centers on Preta, an extraterrestrial entity that arrives on our planet and confronts earthly conceptions of temporality, embodiment, and love for the first time. Across 10 tracks, Dalt sketches a sci-fi vision of bolero, son, and other classic genres she grew up with, traced with ambling congas, jazzy double bass, and quivering tides of distortion. Unspooling the rhythmic threads of ...
