Major music streaming platform Spotify is reportedly testing the option of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) galleries on musicians’ profiles. Should the tests appear successful, the embedment of NFTs would serve to improve artist and fan experiences. Reports surfaced on Friday that Spotify is running a test for select users of the platform’s Android app in the United States. These users can see the NFT previews on the artists’ profiles. Currently, there are only two such artists, DJ and producer Steve Aoki and indie rock band The Wombats — both are known for their adoption of NFTs. There is no possibility for a direct buy, but after reading about the NFT and getting the enlarged preview, the user can tap to be redirected to the OpenSea page where he could purchase the item....
Jamal Edwards, the founder of the iconic and multifaceted UK music platform SBTV, will be awarded the Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS) this year. The 31-year-old author, broadcaster and DJ, who died unexpectedly in February, helped launch the careers of Stormzy, Skepta, Dave and Ed Sheeran, while many other young creatives around the UK have shared stories about Edwards’ help in allowing them to succeed in their respective fields. MITS will be presenting the award on November 7 at The Great Room, Grosvenor House Hotel, where Edwards’ family will be accepting it on behalf of him. The award will also be accepted in aid of the BRIT Trust, music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins and the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust, the charity that was set up by Edwards’ family to honour his memory. “It is...
It’s often said that fans at live concerts give the band a jolt of electricity. Coldplay wants to literally harness that. The pop superstars have added kinetic dance floors and energy-storing stationary bikes to their latest world tour, encouraging fans to help power the show as they dance or spin. It’s part of a larger push to make the tour more environmentally friendly. The band — whose songs include the appropriately titled “Higher Power” — has pledged to be as sustainable and low-carbon as possible, hoping to cut their CO2 emissions by 50%.“You don’t want to come across as being overly earnest. This stuff is really good fun as well,” said bassist Guy Berryman. “That’s the way it will bed in, if people see it less as a sort of onerous responsibility and more as a kind of opportunity to ...
Shakira proved yet again that hips don’t lie when she stopped by The Tonight Show for a dance challenge. Specifically, a “Watch It Once” TikTok challenge, where the Colombian ace and host Jimmy Fallon tried out popular TikTok dances after watching them on the big screen just the one time. Whoever’s completes the routine closest to the original, wins the game. It’s that simple. It’s also simple to predict the winner: Shakira, of course. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news [embedded content] The Latin pop star also sat for a chat with Fallon, ticking off Shakira’s stint as a judge on the NBC series Dancing with Myself, and her April release “Te Felicito” with Puerta Rican singer Rauw Alejandro. Being a mom is top of her chart right now. “I don’t put ...
Arcade Fire brought the confetti for their celebratory performance of “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” at the 2022 Juno Awards on Sunday. Watch the performance below. The Canadian collective played the latest single from their sixth album WE sans the swaying, inflatable dancers that debuted at Arcade Fire’s surprise Coachella set and were later showcased in the song’s music video. But their ebullient and unpredictable energy remained as the band charged through a spirited rendition. Instead, the group was joined by a percussion section of precocious youngsters who not only brightened the stage with beaming smiles but also drove home the coming-of-age message of the rousing anthem’s lyrics. Check it out below. “Unconditional” was one of the four songs that the band played on SNL as part of t...
Listen via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | Pocket Casts | RSS The transition from 1980s new wave and hair rock to 1990s far less follically-minded indie pop wasn’t always a smooth one. But enigmatic, idiosyncratic, and frequently non-grammatical duo They Might Be Giants made it all go down so easy with instantly catchy hooks and frequently hilarious lyrics. The band’s tongue-in-cheek non-sequiturs and unconventional instrumentation masked a knack for writing songs that made us hum the first time we heard them. Nowhere is that more evident than in their major label breakout hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul” from their 1990 album Flood, which is likely the first — and only — song ever sung f...
Monday’s work hours are about as far away from the revelry of a Saturday night as you can get, but Ty Segall is here to bridge the gap with the new song “Saturday Pt. 2.” It’s the latest preview of his upcoming album Hello, Hi, due out July 22nd via Drag City. “Saturday Pt. 2” is the penultimate track on Hello, Hi, coming immediately after the as-yet unreleased “Saturday Pt. 1.” Segall’s lyrics open with claustrophobia and the feeling of walls closing in: “In a room we are waiting,” he sings, “Living life behind closed doors/ Only singing about the flat and/ Painted drywall and concrete floor.” But all is not lost. “I’ve made a gift of you,” he continues, “A window to see through/ Look inside.” From here, the song begins to unfurl as the 34-year-old promises t...

A second suspect in the death of Mac Miller has been convicted. According to reports, 49-year-old Stephen Andrew Walter received a 17-and-a-half-year prison sentence for his role in the fentanyl overdose that ended the rapper’s life. A former dog groomer, Walter pleaded guilty to one charge of fentanyl distribution and claimed that he sent Ryan Michael Reavis — one of the other men charged and recently sentenced to 11 years in prison for Miller’s death — to Cameron Pettit, the third suspect, because he was supposedly unaware that the purchase was meant for Miller, real name Malcolm McCormick, and not for Pettit. “I dealt with Cameron Pettit, and he led me to believe that he was going to ingest the pills that I sold him. He never told me anything about McCormick. He didn’t tell me he w...
