Now that Britney has effectively been freed, FX and Hulu are following up their New York Times Presents documentary Framing Britney Spears with a deep dive into Janet Jackson’s ill-fated performance at the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. Entitled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, the documentary will explore the events that went down that evening and the pop culture shift that followed. Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators took extra precautions while recording their upcoming album, 4. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop most of them from contracting COVID-19 during the process. The Guns N’ Roses guitarist reveals in a new interview that he, Kennedy, and two of the Conspirators all were infected with COVID-19 despite purposely not traveling commercially en route to the studio. “The funniest story about this record was the COVID story, because we took a tour bus to Nashville to keep ourselves safe — to get there and not travel commercially,” Slash told Germany’s Radio Regenbogen (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “And then we went and recorded the whole record, and then I got a phone call from Myles in the studio when I was about to do overdubs, and he goes, ‘Man,...

Editor’s Note: Sly and the Family Stone released their fifth studio album on this day 50 years ago. Read Okla Jones’ retrospective essay below, and stay tuned for an exciting giveaway on Consequence surrounding the anniversary. When There’s a Riot Goin’ On was released in 1971 — exactly 50 years ago today, November 1st — America was a nation in transition, feeling the effects of the previous decade. The shadow of Dr. King’s assassination loomed over the black community; and the Vietnam War divided an entire country. What Sly and the Family Stone’s fifth album did was give a voice to a new generation yearning to be heard. The revolution, as it was referred to by some, was when the hip, twenty-somethings of the world experienced an awakening, so to speak, and pushed the limits of sex, drugs,...

Cat Power announced today that she’s heading out on tour early next year. Additionally, she’s shared her new rendition of “Pa Pa Power” by Dead Man’s Bones from her upcoming album, Covers. The singer-songwriter reimagines the 2009 track by Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields into a haunting, melancholy dirge, replacing the children’s choir and plinking synths of the original with her own backing vocals and dreamy electric guitar. “Burn the streets, burn the cars/ Power/ Broken glass, but what about/ Our broken hearts/ Please make me better/ Please make me powerful,” she sings into dual mics in the accompanying music video, tweaking the song’s lyrics ever so slightly in the process.
