Lana Del Rey’s 10 Best Songs

In 2011, Lizzie Grant introduced the world to Lana Del Rey with songs like “Video Games” and “Born to Die.” Her offerings somehow sounded both apocalyptic and romantic at the same time. Teens, particularly those of the We Heart It set, instantly ate it up. Since then, Del Rey has evolved past many a Tumblr GIF, cementing her place in the pop canon through carefully-crafted ballads and bangers alike. She’s undertaken purposeful collaborations with contemporary stars and the kids of folk icons. An undeniable aesthetic permeates it all, but beneath the schtick is a truly great songwriter. The industry has paid attention, too; Del Rey’s work has earned her six Grammy nominations. Meanwhile, when it comes to both her opinions and her music, LDR is fairly prolific (for better or for worse)....

Adele Calls Celine Dion’s Used Chewing Gum Her “Proudest Possession”

Here’s something to chew on: Adele was asked in a new interview about her most prized possession, and the superstar singer produced a piece of used gum that had once graced the mandibles of Celine Dion. The revelation came as part of Vogue‘s 73 Questions series, though Adele answered 95, seemingly as a tribute to her album titles (19+21+25+ the upcoming 30). As to how she acquired such an interesting artifact, it turns out she got a little help from her friend. “James Corden — who’s a friend of mine but also does ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ which I did — he did it with her and knew how much of a fan of her I was,” Adele said. “And so he made her spit her gum into a piece of paper and he framed it for me, and it’s my proudest possession!” Advertisement Related Video Elsewhere in the interv...

Franz Ferdinand Drummer Paul Thomson Leaves Band, Replaced by Audrey Tait

After 19 years, founding Franz Ferdinand drummer Paul Thomson has left the band. The Scottish rockers made the announcement on Twitter and indicated that he’ll be replaced by Audrey Tait. To show there are no hard feelings, the two drummers posed for a photo in which he symbolically handed her the drumsticks. In a statement, the group wrote, “Paul is leaving the band. It was a bit of a shocker for us when we found out, so it probably will be for some of you too. Paul has been our friend for over twenty five years & we’re looking forward to at least another twenty five. He’s a funny, smart, sensitive guy.” Franz Ferdinand added, “After having played with Paul for so long, it’s obvious that not just anyone could sit behind the kit in FF, so we’re happy to say that one of the other b...

Alex Lahey Shares Free-Spirited New Single “Spike the Punch”: Stream

Alex Lahey returns today with “Spike the Punch,” her first proper solo single of 2021. Self-produced alongside John Castle and mixed by Grammy winner Carlos de la Garza, the power-pop tune arrives with a stunning accompanying music video. Like taking a gulp of jungle juice in the wee morning hours at a house party, “Spike the Punch” feels like an inhibition-free sugar rush. Its lyrics reckon with the euphoria of ditching your morals, while the threat of real consequences always linger in the shadows: “I got my ass kicked, it was fantastic /Kept going back like a hopeless romantic,” Lahey sings in the track’s opening lines before an explosive chorus. “‘Spike the Punch’ is a song about the fun that comes with self-sabotage and reckless abandon,” Lahey wrote in a statement. “It’s big, it’s lo...

Andrew Bird and Lucius Share Live Performance of The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs”: Watch

Andrew Bird and Lucius were among a slew of high-profile acts who contributed to the recently released track-by-track covers album  I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground & Nico, and now they have shared an intimate live recording of their take on “Venus in Furs.” Of course, “Venus in Furs” wouldn’t be complete without John Cale’s iconic viola solo. It makes sense that Bird — who’s a bit of a violin legend in his own right — would put his own spin on the track, using loop pedals to fill out the live performance as he then plucks the four-stringed instrument like a banjo alongside Lucius’ flawless vocal harmonies. Though nobody could compete with Lou Reed and company, this is one cover that rivals its original. Check out their living room performance of “Venus In ...

Issa Rae, BJ The Chicago Kid, Victoria Monét and More on How Insecure “Truly Represents the Creatives” Through Music

Over the past five years, we’ve seen Issa Rae’s iconic Insecure character Issa Dee through it all. Between the break-ups, stalking potential baes on Instagram, and having to furnish a new home with no money to her name, Issa has been a voice of her millennial generation. Amid the ups and downs of adult life, Rae has portrayed a millennial in an all-too-relatable manner, alongside a killer soundtrack. Since the inception of her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, Rae has aimed to make music “a character” in all of her projects. On HBO’s Insecure, which premieres its fifth and final season this Sunday (October 24th), we see Issa experience wins and losses, with many scenes tied to a specific song. Over the years, Rae, composer Raphael Saadiq and music supervisor Kier Lehman have used the show...
