Brian Wilson has announced At My Piano, a collection of new instrumental takes on Beach Boys hits. The album is out on November 19th via Decca Records. As the title suggests, the 15-track effort features piano-only renditions of Beach Boys classics such as “California Girls,” “Surf’s Up,” and “Good Vibrations.” Stripped back versions of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “In My Room,” and “Don’t Worry Baby” are also included on the album. In a press statement, Wilson remembered learning how to play music on the piano while growing up. “We had an upright piano in our living room and from the time I was 12 years old I played it each and every day. I never had a lesson, I was completely self-taught,” he said. “I can’t express how much the piano has played such an important part in my life. It has bought ...
Today marks the long-awaited release of St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein’s mockumentary thriller The Nowhere Inn. As the film hits select theaters and video-on-demand services, so too has the St. Vinny’s Nowhere Inn soundtrack dropped on streaming platforms. Take a listen below. Previously previewed with the title track/theme, the Nowhere Inn OST is a mix of full songs (“Palm Desert,” “Waiting on a Wave”) and trippy score that matches the movie’s twisted, humorous vibes. While there are tracks called “Carrie Wave,” “Carrie Voicemail,” and “Carrie off Bus,” Brownstein herself doesn’t appear on the soundtrack. Riot Fest kicked off in Chicago’s Douglass Park on Thursday, September 16th. All eyes were on late-addition Morrissey, who actually showed up and played a complete set. (Check out Consequence’s full account of the headlining gig here.) Punk-poet icon Patti Smith also trotted out classics like “People Have the Power,” “Redondo Beach” and “Because the Night” for what was billed as the festival’s “preview party,” while backed by her veteran band. “We are so grateful to play,” Smith said at one point, acknowledging the, you know, global crisis. “We are still in the center of a global pandemic, and don’t forget it. Take care of yourselves.” Advertisement Related Video Alkaline Trio and Joyce Manor also drew enthusiastic crowds, ushering in a late-summer weekend of good ol’ rock music. Chec...
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have unveiled the title track for their upcoming album Love For Sale. Watch the song’s accompanying music video below. The two superstars turn the jazzy Cole Porter standard into an old-fashioned duet, trading lines and harmonies over a big band. “Let the poets pipe of love/ In their childish way/ I know every type of love/ Better far than they,” Gaga warbles before being joined by Bennett on the rest of the verse. Originally introduced by Porter in his 1930 musical The New Yorkers, the song was a controversial addition to the Great American Songbook due to its racy telling of a sex worker advertising her “love for sale.” However, on the updated version, Mother Monster and the 95-year-old crooner spell out the song from a more distant third-person perspective. Try not to feint from shock, but a festival named for violent disobedience is showing some indifference to following the rules. The question is whether Chicago’s Riot Fest 2021 can enforce enough of its own COVID-19 protocols to avoid becoming a super-spreader event. There’s one big reason to think it’s possible. Last month, Lollapalooza welcomed some 385,000 concert-goers in the middle of a pandemic, and only about 200 new COVID-19 cases were traced to the four-day event. That’s not the only evidence that Chicago can responsibly host many thousands of people in controlled outdoor settings. While it’s too early to make any judgments about the 2021 Pitchfork Music Festival, those coronavirus entrance requirements were stricter than most. Besides that, organizers heavily encouraged...

Next week, Genesis will hit the road together for the first time in 14 years. While the name of the “The Last Domino? Tour,” suggests the possibility for more shows beyond 2021, Phil Collins has now confirmed that once the band wraps up their North American leg in mid-December, that’ll be it. In the latest issue of Mojo, Collins advised fans that this will be their final chance to see Genesis in concert. “This English and American tour, that will be enough for me,” he said adamantly. When the interviewer asked if that meant the question mark would be removed from the tour title and the shows would end before 2022, Collins replied, “Yes. The question mark was Tony Banks’ idea.” By the sound of it, the rest of the band could be persuaded to go either way. “I think it depends a little bi...
