Artist of the Month serpentwithfeet’s DEACON Is a Bountiful Collage of Love and Care: Review

The Lowdown: Serpentwithfeet first gained attention in 2016 with his EP blisters, and then more broadly in 2018, when his debut album, soil , earned praise for its complex and subtle portrayals of love. Born Josiah Wise, he grew up in a religious family and sang in the church choir, and the influences of classical and gospel have long made themselves known in his music. DEACON isn’t quite a departure, but it is a move forward into more expansive territory; the sound serpent has taken on feels like it can accommodate more, and indeed, it does. DEACON is full of songs that wrap around the listener, showing in full resolution serpent’s expertise in using his music not only to portray love, but to extend it. serpentwithfeet Releases Sophomore Album DEACON: Stream

Our March Artist of the Month, serpentwithfeet has today unleashed his stellar sophomore album, DEACON. Stream the 11-track effort below via Apple Music and Spotify, and read our review here. Serving as the direct follow-up to 2020’s Apparition EP, DEACON marks serpentwithfeet’s first full-length since 2018’s soil. The R&B artist has taken a more pop-forward approach for this release, as demonstrated on early singles like “Fellowship”, “Same Size Shoe”, and “Heart Storm”. Regardless of the shift in sonics, however, serpent is still writing about many of the same vulnerable themes, particularly Black gay love. As he told Consequence of Sound in our recent AOTM interview, “I see myself writing about gay love and Black gay love specifically for a long time. That’s what I’ve been writing a...

Lil Nas X Releases New Single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”: Stream

After teasing it for nearly a year, Lil Nas X has finally released his long-awaited new single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” alongside a dreamy music video. Stream it below. Technically “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” sounds nothing like Lil Nas X’s original breakout single “Old Town Road”, which stirred some controversy by being deemed too hip-hop for country radio before ultimately dominating the Billboard charts at large anyway. However, this new track aims for a similar unexpected mashup of sorts, blending low-key rap with a beat that recalls flamenco and reggeaton dipped in pop. It’s catchy, warm, and primed to become a summer hit. “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” derives its title from Nas’ birth name, which may explain some of the angelic life-versus-death themes present in the ...

Taylor Swift Unearths Previously-Unreleased Song “You All Over Me”: Stream

Taylor Swift has unveiled a previously unreleased song called “You All Over Me”. Stream it now via Apple Music or Spotify. The track was originally written well over a decade ago for Swift’s 2008 breakout Fearless, but it didn’t end up making the cut for the tracklist and has been living in the superstar’s vault ever since. A demo version of the song was leaked back in 2017, but now the 11-time Grammy winner has properly re-recorded it and cleaned it up for a legitimate release. As Swift wrote on Twitter, this version of “You All Over Me” features background vocals from the country-pop star Maren Morris. “One thing I’ve been loving about these From The Vault songs is that they’ve never been heard, so I can experiment, play, and even include some of my favorite artists,” she wrote.&nbs...

Tomahawk (Mike Patton) Release New Album Tonic Immobility: Stream

Tomahawk have released their fifth studio album, Tonic Immobility. It’s the band’s first album in eight years and continues singer Mike Patton’s prolific output via his various projects. Formed in 1999, Tomahawk is primarily the songwriting vehicle for Patton and guitarist Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard). The group is rounded out by drummer John Stanier (Battles, ex-Helmet) and bassist Trevor Dunn (who plays with Patton in Mr. Bungle). Known for their mysterious and evocative alt-rock sound, Tomahawk previewed Tonic Immobility with the singles “Business Casual” and “Dog Eat Dog”. Like the expansive desert scene on the album cover, the songs pair a heavy melodicism with the right amount of musical restraint and adventurousness. A “Covid record,” per say, Tonic Immobility was recorded in 20...

The Offspring’s “Let the Bad Times Roll” Video Features Laser Cats, Singing Toilet Paper, and More: Watch

The Offspring have unveiled a timely music video to accompany their recent single “Let the Bad Times Roll”. The song appears on the veteran punk-rock act’s upcoming album of the same name, due out April 16th. The video shows an exaggerated view of quarantine life, with the subjects experiencing bizarre and frightening situations while stuck at home. One young woman sees her smartphone turn into a scorpion-like creature as it crawls on her face, while another woman is confronted by singing toilet paper and a giant mask-wearing cockroach. Meanwhile, a young man is playing a video game when a cat appears on screen and starts shooting laser beams out of its eyes. Another dude is attacked at home by a bizarre mob, somewhat mimicking the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building. As a press rele...

YouTuber Turns Pearl Jam’s “Black” into a Type O Negative Song: Stream

Eddie Vedder, photo by Lior Phillips / Denis Pauna, via YouTube / Peter Steele in Symphony for the Devil The YouTuber who brought us Depeche Motörhead is back with a new cover, this time turning Pearl Jam’s “Black” into a Type O Negative song. The brooding grunge ballad works nicely in the vein of the gothic metal legends. The talented Denis Pauna stretches the song out to over nine minutes — as Type O were wont to do. The chords are slowed down and drawn out for maximum heaviness. He also delivers a spot-on Peter Steele impersonation, channeling the late singer’s baritone voice and vampiric dialect while looking somewhat like a cross between the late Steele and a flannel-clad Eddie Vedder. Type O Negative are one of Pauna’s go-to acts when reinterpreting classic songs. He has already give...
