R.I.P. Juini Booth, Bassist for Sun Ra Arkestra, Chick Corea, Art Blakey, and Pharoah Sanders Dead at 73
Juini Booth, who plied his bass with some of the grandest figures in jazz history, has died at 73. Over his six decade career, Booth was a member of Sun Ra Arkestra and accompanied such legends as Art Blakey, Pharoah Sanders, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and Coleman Hawkins. He passed away July 11th, according to Buffalo News, after a six-week decline in health preceded by breaking his hip in a fall at home. Born Arthur Edward Booth on Feb. 12th, 1948, Booth picked up his nickname from his sister Mary Booth-Bowden. “My mother would say, ‘Go call Junior!’ and I would say, ‘Juini!” she said. “He would tell everybody, ‘My sister named me!’” Booth first established himself in the jazz scene of his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Reveals Cancer Type: “My Blood’s Trying to Kill Me”
After a few months of undergoing treatment on the down-low, Mark Hoppus has revealed his exact type of cancer. The Blink-182 singer/bassist confirmed in a recent Twitch Q&A that he’s been diagnosed with 4-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the same type of cancer his mother survived. In his words: “My blood’s trying to kill me.” Hoppus specified that he would soon be going in for a PET scan to determine the effects of his chemotherapy so far. “Ideally I go in tomorrow and they say, ‘Congratulations! Foo Fighters had planned to play The Forum in Los Angeles this weekend, but on Wednesday night the group announced that they were pushing the show to a later date because of a positive COVID-19 test within their team. “Despite having made every effort to follow CDC Covid protocols and local laws, there has been a confirmed Covid-19 case within the Foo Fighters organization,” the band’s announcement read on Instagram. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the band, crew and most of all the fans, Saturday’s show at the Los Angeles Forum is being postponed to a later date.
