ConstitutionDAO, a ‘crypto red alert’ and other cases of crypto-powered social action in 2021

ConstitutionDAO: $49 million raised in a few days Arguably, the most high-profile case of a massive fundraising effort enabled by a decentralized autonomous organization in 2021 was ConstitutionDAO. The group was formed in November with the sole objective of purchasing an original copy of the United States Constitution, whi...

Testament guitarist and unlikely political hip-hop prodigy Alex Skolnick has debuted his new rap group, Hu$h Money, and shared the video for the track “B.I.G. L.I.E.” Last year, Skolnick made headlines when he released a pair of politically-charged rap songs, one blasting Donald Trump and another encouraging us to “Wear a F**king Mask.” Now Skolnick has returned as his alter ego Skoly-D and teamed up with co-conspirator Kimmy G, aka Kimmy Gordon, for a full-blown rap project. “B.I.G. Naturally, Biden’s salvo was the first and perhaps loudest moment thus far of th...

Israeli Politicians Call Emma Watson Anti-Semitic for Pro-Palestine Instagram Post

Emma Watson has long been an outspoken actress, but her most recent foray into activism isn’t going over well with some politicians. After sharing a pro-Palestine image on Instagram on January 2nd, the Harry Potter star has come under fire from some Israeli politicians, who called the post anti-Semitic. Watson posted a photo of a pro-Palestine protest with the phrase “Solidarity is a verb” overlaid across the center. In the caption, she quoted the academic Sara Ahmed, who offers insight into the meaning of solidarity. All things considered, it’s a pretty harmless post — Watson doesn’t even use her own words, let alone comment on Israel or Jewish people directly. See for yourself below. Still, that didn’t stop Israeli politicians from turning on the actress. “10 points from Gryffindor for b...
