NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope Captures Detailed Image of Uranus

After capturing the clearest view of Neptune in decades, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has now taken new images of the other ice giant in our solar system, Uranus. Thanks to the observatory's unprecedented sensitivity, we are able to see the faintest of the planet's surrounding rings and features of its atmosphere.Pictured above is Uranus' northern pole which is currently experiencing late spring. While previous pass-by images showed a featureless orb, the latest images provide more detail to the dynamic atmosphere of Uranus. The brighter sides at the right of the planet is known as a polar cap, which seems to appear in the summer and vanish in the fall. Meanwhile, the bright cloud on the left is said to be connected to storm activity. 11 of Uranus' 13 rings and six of its 27 known moo...

Mini, the British car brand owned by German automaker BMW, has announced a new “intelligent personal assistant” called Spike, based on the English Bulldog that’s appeared in some past Mini ads. Spike will make his first major appearance at the Shanghai auto show later this month where he’ll be integrated into the cockpit of the Mini Concept Aceman. We can’t help but agree with Jalopnik, which points out that the whole announcement has very “Microsoft Clippy” vibes, or maybe LG’s Bean Bird? The plan is to eventually have Spike appear in future production cars. Carscoops reports that these future models will include the 2023 Mini Countryman...

Meta Released a New AI Model That Can Recognize and Mask Objects in Images and Videos

Meta released a new artificial intelligence (AI) model this week that has the ability to identify specific objects in an image, as well as an entire dataset of image annotations that is said to be the largest to-date. The Segment Anything Model, or SAM, for short, is impressively advanced; it can recognize items in images and videos that it has not encountered in its initial training, according to Meta's blog post. With SAM, Meta aimed to simultaneously create a general, promptable segmentation model and utilize its functions to build out its segmentation dataset, which it calls the Segment Anything 1-Billion mask dataset (SA-1B), at an unmatched scale.
