J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot are producing a scripted series about U2 for Netflix. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the as-yet untitled show will be written by Anthony McCarten, Hollywood’s go-to biopic scribe who has penned such based-on-a-true-story tales as The Theory of Everything (2014), Darkest Hour (2017), The Two Popes (2019), and most relevant for music fans, the cliche-riddled take on Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). Amazon Closes $8.5 Billion Deal to Acquire MGM
Amazon has officially brought yet another company under its wing. Jeff Bezos’ empire announced today that it has closed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM. The deal, which was first announced back in May 2021, adds more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV shows to Amazon’s Prime Video catalog. This merger means that giant franchises like the James Bond series, as well as Silence of the Lambs, Rocky, and The Hobbit, now belong to Amazon. The company now owns the rights to some storied TV classics, such as The Apprentice and the fabled racist Donald Trump tapes. Jussie Smollett Released from Jail Pending Appeal
Less than a week after being sentenced to 150 days in jail for staging a hate crime and lying to police, a court ordered Jussie Smollett to be released from custody as his attorneys ready an appeal. On March 10th, a Chicago court sentenced Smollett to 150 days in jail and 30 months felony probation for falsely reporting to police that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack. He was also fined $25,000 and ordered to pay $120,106 in restitution. Today (March 16th), a court agreed to stay last week’s sentence, or put it on hold. The actor will be freed on bond pending an appeal.
