Luca Guadagnino’s We Are Who We Are Lingers on the Limbo of Adolescence: Review

The Pitch: Adolescence is rough enough in the best of circumstances; hormones rage, rebellion rises, and you’re left wondering about the state of the world you’re growing into. But try growing up on a military base in a foreign country during the 2016 election — surrounded by conformity in a terrifying year for budding authoritarianism — with the promise of joy and freedom just one town over. That’s the world in which rebellious iconoclast Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer) lives, his mother, Sarah (Chloë Sevigny), having just been promoted to the commander of a US military base in Italy. He bristles against the move, taking out that frustration in exasperated shrugs and outbursts at both Sarah and her partner, a fellow soldier named Maggie (Alice Braga), who tries to negotiate their dysfunct...

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Renewed for Three More Seasons

HBO has announced a three-season renewal for its award-winning satirical news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The new deal will keep John Oliver dissecting socio-political shortcomings and feuding with Connecticut towns through at least 2023. “We’re all extremely happy to be able to continue to do our show on HBO for another three years, or until the end of the world, whichever comes first,” said Oliver in a press statement. Since Oliver moved from The Daily Show correspondent to premium cable host in 2014, Last Week Tonight has earned two Peabody Awards and an astounding 16 Emmys. That includes four last year, including taking home the Outstanding Variety Talk Series trophy for the fourth year running. It will have a chance to extend that streak to five at this year’s ceremony, w...

John C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Armisen Take Flight in First Moonbase 8 Teaser: Watch

This past weekend marked the 58th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s famous Moon Speech, given in Houston to promote America’s Apollo program to put a man on the moon. To coincide with the occasion, Showtime has released the first teaser for its space-themed comedy series Moonbase 8, starring John C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Armisen. Due to premiere sometime this fall, the TV show follows three subpar astronauts who live and train at NASA’s Moon Base Simulator in Arizona. The goal is to one day qualify for a lunar mission, but their lack of expertise proves to be more than just a minor hurdle. Today’s teaser trailer shows us some of the basic exercises and tasks assigned to this goofy trio — and how they’re all so easily botched. Let’s just say JFK probably wouldn’t wan...

10 Years And Counting: This Woman Spent An Entire Decade Dating A Catfish

In 2010, a then-26-year-old Nev Schulman accidentally kickstarted a cultural phenomenon when he, his brother and a friend investigated Nev’s suspicious online relationship with a girl named Megan, only to discover Meagan was a total fraud. The very same year, an aspiring model named Stephanie similarly embarked on a virtual-only relationship with a guy named Danny, and on the latest episode of Catfish, Nev and Kamie hoped Stephanie — still in the throes of her shadowy love affair a decade later — wouldn’t face the same disappointment. The young Florida mom explained to MTV’s detective duo that she first met Danny, a photographer, on Facebook in 2010. Then 17, Stephanie wrote a public message on Danny’s wall asking if he’d like to collaborate on a photoshoot. They never wound up working tog...

Mom Or Pop: Is Isaac Old Enough To Decide Who He Stays With On Teen Mom 2?

Kailyn and Jo agreed to a 50/50 custody agreement for Isaac back on Season 8 of Teen Mom 2. But during this week’s episode, Isaac questioned why he had to go to his dad’s and expressed that he would rather remain at Kailyn’s house. “Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for you, and I know you don’t see it right now, you have to go to your dad’s because he’s fifty percent of your parents,” Kail told her eldest, while en route to Jo’s home. “Every time you go to your dad’s, do you have a good time?” “Yeah, but I do the same thing every day,” Isaac responded. “And I can’t do anything else because he doesn’t plan anything special or anything.” Kail tried her best to remind him that he i...

Will Smith Lists Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Mansion on Airbnb

Now this is a story all about how you could end up staying in a nostalgia dream pad. Will Smith has listed the Los Angeles mansion used for exterior shots of his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air home for rental on Airbnb. The chance to sit on Big Willie’s throne comes as the classic sitcom celebrates its 30th anniversary — and a night’s stay will only cost you $30. That will get you a private wing of the mansion, what would have been Will’s section had the Fresh Prince actually been filmed inside. While the rest of the home will be empty, you’ll have access to a king-size bedroom, a full bathroom, the pool area, an outdoor lounge space, and a dining room. Guests will be able to play basketball in the bedroom (“you read that right — IN the bedroom,” Smith confirms on the listing), spin DJ Jazzy...

Family Guy Elects Sam Elliott to Replace Adam West as Mayor

Two years after the death of Adam West, Quahog has a new mayor. Family Guy has tapped Sam Elliott to voice the animated town’s newest civil servant. West voiced Mayor Adam West, an eccentric and kooky version of himself, for over 100 episodes on the hit Fox cartoon. Though the actor passed away in 2017, Family Guy was able to continue with his character through the following year, as he’d already recorded a number of episodes prior to his death. The show paid tribute to West last year by renaming Quahog’s high school after him. Now, as Entertainment Weekly reports, the series is ready to welcome its new mayor — a decision producers did not take lightly. “We wanted to take the time to respect Adam,” said executive producer Richard Appel. “In having a conversation about ‘How do you replace h...

That “Strange Case” in HBO’s Lovecraft Country We Can’t Stop Thinking About

Warning: This editorial discusses scenes depicting rape and sexual assault. HBO’s Lovecraft Country has been a wild ride so far. In just four episodes, we’ve seen haunted houses, vampiric monsters, and mysterious cults, along with the real world horrors of Jim Crow laws and white supremacy. The series’ fifth episode — this past Sunday’s “Strange Case” — manages to top all of that with one of the most disturbing scenes in recent memory. In a twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku), a Black woman takes a potion and wakes up in a white body. At first, she’s shocked and horrified, but begins to see the value in this new “currency” of whiteness. The potion eventually wears off, causing Ruby to violently shed her new skin in bloo...

Amazon Acquires Joe Exotic Series Starring Nicolas Cage

Amazon has nabbed the rights to the upcoming Joe Exotic TV series starring Nicolas Cage. The eight-episode series is being helmed by Dan Lagana, co-creator and showrunner of the Netflix mockumentary American Vandal. The story will focus on rise and fall of the eccentric zookeeper, who became an Internet sensation after being featured in the Netflix documentary Tiger King. He is currently serving 22 years in a federal prison after being found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot against his former rival, Carole Baskin, as well as for animal abuse. (Earlier this week, Joe Exotic formally petitioned Donald Trump for a pardon.) The origins of Lagana’s project actually pre-date Netflix’s Tiger King. CBS Television Studios optioned the series, based on a Texas Monthly&n...

Emotions are high for the Supernatural family. Today, The CW series reached its final day of shooting, concluding an epic run that spans 15 years and 15 seasons. Not surprisingly, the cast, the crew, and the fans reflected on the momentous occasion, so much so that #ThankYouSupernatural became the No. 1 trend on Twitter. Series creator Eric Kripke, who served as showrunner for the first five seasons, more or less kicked off the odes early Thursday morning. He shared a GIF of stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, adding: “This was the first #Supernatural scene we shot. Today will be the last. I’m grateful & love you all beyond words. But it’s only over when you say it is, #SPNFamily. In the words of Kim Manners (RIP): Kick It In The Ass.” Ackles later followed with a few photos on In...
