Who’s surprised to hear I’m shopping for activewear in January? No one? Yeah, I figured.
I always get hyped up on fitness this time of year because there isn’t much else to do, especially if you live somewhere cold. Plus, all this talk about New Year’s resolutions, even though I’ve tapped out this year, has my mind on getting back into my routine. This year, my only goal is to stay moving. I am really looking forward to working out for the sake of working out simply because I love it. I’ve put myself on the waiting list for several popular Pilates classes, and in the meantime, I’m in the mood to give my activewear drawer a refresh.
This is the upgrade anyone who loves working out as much as I do absolutely needs. I have the perfect outfit for a chill Pilates flow nailed down, but I also occasionally go for runs and consistently lift weights. My goal with this roundup is to find pieces that are both functional and cute. My least favorite thing is when I discover something in my activewear drawer isn’t cutting it during leg day or overexposing me. This is the year of making your activewear work for you. Below, these are the 42 pieces that’ll make it happen.
Track Star
Activewear right now is all about a retro look, so it’s no surprise racing stripes have made their way to center stage. Whether you go for nylon track pants or the modern legging take on the trend, you can’t go wrong.
The Layered Look
What started as a micro-trend is now available for purchase from every single one of my favorite brands. The look of two sports bras in one is not only super supportive, but it’s also chic.
V Waistlines
If wearing a low-waisted pair of leggings, scares you, you need to test-drive a V waistline. It’s incredibly flattering.
Flared Leggings
Lately, I’ve loved wearing flared leggings on lift days. They’re not exactly yoga pants because they offer a lot more support, but they have the same effortless look.
One-Step Wonder
For a lazy day, throwing on a onesie of some sort never fails. It gets you out of the door fast, and you never have to worry about your leggings slipping down.
Contrast Lining
Another motif in activewear lately that feels incredibly retro come from the contrast colors that outline staple pieces. It’s a fun upgrade to the classics.
The Final Touch
When it’s winter in NYC, wearing what you wear in the gym without an extra layer isn’t possible. You need a coat, a sweatshirt, and an extra layer. A bolero or wrap top is my favorite thing to wear during a warm-up.
