Volkswagen and premium manufacturer n+ have introduced a new lineup of licensed electric bicycles designed to bridge the gap between automotive safety and urban micromobility. Prioritizing rider awareness over raw speed or motor power, the new Sport and Crossover models utilize a sophisticated network of sensors and cameras. The initiative aims to help cyclists navigate congested city streets safely while giving motorists clearer visual cues of the rider’s intentions.
The core of the technology suite is a proprietary system branded as Smart View. A high-definition rear-facing camera pairs with integrated radar sensors to actively monitor approaching traffic. Real-time video feeds and proximity alerts are delivered directly to a cockpit-mounted screen. The setup allows riders to check their blind spots without ever needing to turn their heads away from the road ahead.
Automotive inspiration continues with a radical approach to bicycle lighting. A full-length LED strip embedded directly into the frame serves as a constant daytime running light. The intelligent lighting array reacts dynamically to riding behavior, glowing bright red during deceleration and flashing amber to signal upcoming turns. The design ensures other commuters can easily predict directional changes.
The protective ecosystem is completed by a suite of connected wearables. A specialized Smart Helmet synchronizes its lighting with the bike signals and features built-in crash detection to automatically notify emergency contacts after a severe impact. Complementing the helmet is a pair of smart glasses developed by engineers with experience creating head-mounted displays for military pilots. The eyewear projects speed, battery data and navigation instructions straight into the rider’s field of view.
Priced to compete in the premium sector, the Sport models start at roughly $5,300 USD, while the helmet and smart glasses cost an additional $670 USD each. Peter Jost, CEO of Volkswagen Accessories, noted that integrating systems commonly known from the automotive world demonstrates how safety measures can evolve meaningfully for modern cyclists. As urban centers become increasingly crowded, baking collision-avoidance hardware right into the chassis represents a significant leap forward for two-wheeled transit.
