Two titans of engineering and innovation came together to celebrate a massive year of milestones over the weekend. During round four of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca on May 3rd, Porsche showcased a spectacular historic livery on its factory racing prototypes. Paying homage to one of the most recognizable and beloved wraps in racing history, the Porsche Penske Motorsport team hit the California track sporting the classic rainbow spectrum of the original Apple Computer design.
The striking design was far more than just a nostalgic visual. It honored the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport while simultaneously celebrating 50 years since the founding of Apple. The livery traces its roots directly back to the 1980 racing season, when the US-based customer team Dick Barbour Racing entered an Apple-liveried Porsche 935 K3 into major endurance events, including the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. Decades later, that shared passion for innovation was successfully revived on the cutting-edge Porsche 963.
Choosing the Laguna Seca Raceway for this historic tribute was a deeply intentional move by both brands. Situated in Northern California, the iconic circuit is located just down the road from Apple Park in Cupertino. Furthermore, the track has long been a spiritual home for the automaker in North America, regularly hosting the massive Porsche Rennsport Reunion.
Entering the race as championship leaders, the Porsche Penske Motorsport works team fielded two of the LMDh-regulation Porsche 963 entries. The No. 6 car was driven by France’s Kévin Estre and Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, while the sister No. 7 car was piloted by Frenchman Julien Andlauer and Brazilian Felipe Nasr.
By resurrecting a legendary 1980s aesthetic on highly advanced, modern hybrid prototypes, Porsche and Apple delivered a masterclass in motorsport heritage. Seeing the retro-futuristic 963 prototypes take the grid this past weekend served as a high-speed celebration of two brands that have spent decades defining their respective industries.
