Xiu Xiu Announce New Album Inspired by David Lynch's Eraserhead

Experimental rock duo Xiu Xiu have announced a new album and live project inspired by Eraserhead, David Lynch’s surrealist 1977 cult classic. The release, titled Eraserhead Xiu Xiu, arrives July 10th via Polyvinyl, and is previewed by the band’s haunting rendition of “In Heaven.” Stream it below.

Eraserhead Xiu Xiu comes a decade after the band’s acclaimed 2016 tribute project, Plays the Music of Twin Peaks, which was made with the blessing of the late Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti. After retiring the effort in 2018, the duo received many requests to revive the material. Xiu Xiu opted to pursue a deeper exploration of Lynch’s work through an examination of his debut feature.

According to the band, Eraserhead Xiu Xiu will exist simultaneously as a live concert experience, accompanying film, and full-length album. The offering incorporates field recordings, homemade instruments, organ, modular synths, electrical interference, raw audio components, and manipulated vocals to channel the unrelenting dread, fractured intimacy, and industrial nightmare atmosphere of Lynch’s late-night landmark.

The project leans heavily into sound collage and experimental composition, ranging from ambient passages to bursts of raw industrial noise. Closing track “In Heaven” — also known as the “Lady in the Radiator” song and originally composed by Peter Ivers — arrives with a monochrome video aligned with the ethos of the original film. It sees vocalist Jamie Stewart delivering the lyrics, “In Heaven, everything is fine/ In Heaven, everything is fine/ You’ve got your good things, and I’ve got mine,” in a delicate, warm cadence amid the work’s otherwise unnerving atmosphere.

Xiu Xiu also noted that the original sound design created by Lynch and sound designer Alan Splet served as a guiding influence throughout the recording process. Eraserhead Xiu Xiu was recorded by Stewart and Angela Seo at Krankenschwester in Berlin and mastered by Alan Douches at West Westside Music in New York.

In addition to the album, Xiu Xiu will support the release with a run of West Coast tour dates later this year. The dates include a pair of performances in Los Angeles this October at 2220 Arts + Archives, alongside a stop in San Francisco at Gray Area. Get tickets at their official website.

Lynch passed away in January 2025 as a result of cardiac arrest. This past February, it was reported that his family was planning to publish the script for the filmmaker’s unrealized project Unrecorded Night.
