Buh-Bye, Heels—The Controversial Flat-Shoe Trend I Saw So Many Celebs Wear After the Met Gala

Buh-Bye, Heels—The Controversial Flat-Shoe Trend I Saw So Many Celebs Wear After the Met Gala

In my experience, one of the best ways to assess how comfortable a shoe really is is to watch what celebrities wear after a big event, not during it. Red carpet heels might look incredible, but they’re rarely chosen with comfort in mind. The morning after, however? That’s when the truth comes out. And there’s no better time to investigate than the post-Met Gala hotel departures.

After a long evening spent in towering heels and theatrical couture, the day after the Met Gala must be devoted to comfort, and I’ve already spotted a post-Met Gala shoe trend pick up amongst some of my favourite A-listers. Packing up their heels, it was Maison Margiela’s Tabi Ballet Flats (£750) that celebrities were quick to slip into this year.

Clearly ready to give their arches a break, Zendaya and Emma Chamberlain ditched their stilettos in favour of Maison Margiela’s iconic split-toe ballet flats on Tuesday morning.

With their signature hoof-like silhouette, the Tabi ballet flats are undeniably divisive. Some call them avant-garde, others can’t get past the cloven-toe design. But among fashion insiders? They’re cult-status, ticking both the “ugly shoe” and comfort-core boxes in one stylish step.

Only hours earlier, Zendaya had been teetering in 150mm Jimmy Choo Max platforms, while Chamberlain opted for a sharp pair of pointed-toe pumps—so it’s no surprise both gravitated toward something flatter (and far more forgiving) come morning.

While they might not be to everyone’s taste, Tabis are having a moment. And when the world’s best-dressed celebs unanimously choose the same controversial flats post-party? It might just be time to consider the pair for yourself. Read on to discover and shop Tabis below.
