Meanwhile, each side of Next to Die focuses on either death metal or the more extreme end of groove metal. “It started out as an album full of death metal songs with speed and aggression,” guitarist Jack Owen explained in a statement. “Then [vocalist] Chris [Barnes] had the brilliant idea to keep half of those death metal songs and add some groovier songs in the vein of the early SIX FEET UNDER material.”

The upcoming full-length marks the third record reuniting Chris Barnes and Jack Owen, both founding members of fellow legendary death metal act Cannibal Corpse. That energy is felt immediately on new single “Unmistakable Smell of Death.” It’s fast and aggressive, featuring a tremolo riff that would fit right in with Cannibal Corpse classics like “Hammer Smashed Face” and “Rancid Amputation.”

Of the song’s lyrical direction, Owen stated, “I’m writing from the perspective of a killer who toys with a victim and unties them, allowing them to fight. He underestimates their ability to fight, and they get the better of the killer, ultimately impaling and beheading him. The ‘Unmistakable Smell of Death’ is now that of the killer!”

Lyrical duties on the record are shared between Barnes and Owen, who also co-produced the album together. It features Ray Suhy once more on lead guitar, mirroring the twin-guitar approach of early Cannibal Corpse. The comfort that the duo of Barnes and Owen must feel in this arrangement is palpable on the record, producing death and groove metal that is intense and unforced. Pre-order it here.
