Writer-director Martin McDonagh is officially returning to the big screen with his signature brand of sharp dialogue and dark humor. Searchlight Pictures has dropped the highly anticipated first trailer for Wild Horse Nine, a brand-new dark comedy starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell. Serving as McDonagh’s first feature since his critically acclaimed 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, the upcoming movie promises a hilarious and morally complex journey through 1970s South America.
Set against the tense political backdrop of 1973 Chile, Wild Horse Nine follows two CIA agents embarking on a mission that tests their complicated bond and implicates them in historical U.S. interventions. Malkovich plays Chris, an aging agent struggling with declining health, mounting guilt, and the persistent desire to write his memoir. Rockwell stars opposite him as Lee, his devoted but equally complex protégé. The newly released trailer gives off heavy In Bruges vibes, featuring the fast-paced, foul-mouthed bickering that has defined McDonagh’s celebrated filmography.
McDonagh notably crafted the lead roles with Malkovich and Rockwell specifically in mind, but the central duo is supported by a massive ensemble cast. Steve Buscemi steps into the role of the agents’ boss, while the supporting lineup includes Parker Posey, Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, and legendary musician Tom Waits, marking another collaborative reunion between Waits and the director.
Following a successful production run in Rapa Nui—the indigenous name for Easter Island—and strong early buzz, Wild Horse Nine is positioning itself as a major theatrical event and a heavy awards season contender for Searchlight Pictures later this year.
