
The 1966 debut album of Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, will celebrate its 60th anniversary with new editions containing a freaking load of rare and never-released recordings and mixes totaling 105 tracks on the most expansive version.
Freak Out!: 60th Anniversary will be released September 25th on Zappa Records and Universal Music Enterprises. The anniversary release was produced by Zappa vault caretaker Joe Travers and comes in four versions. Fans can pre-order all versions of Freak Out!: 60th Anniversary here.
Freak Out!: 60th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition contains five CDs and a Blu-ray audio disc with 105 tracks that include 2025 remasters, 2026 mixes by John Polito, restored 1966 mono mix, mono vocal reference mixes, outtake collages, demos, rehearsal recordings, and live material recorded at three 1966 shows at San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium. The Blu-ray also gives listeners new surround sound and Dolby Atmos mixes of the original album, three archival mixes, “trippy” visualizers, and a surround sound mix of “Groupie Bang Bang” from the Zappa vault.

The Super Deluxe Edition will have other goodies like a litho print and a 26-page booklet with rare photos, liner notes, and new historical essays. The booklet also includes a replica of the Freak Out! Hot Spots Map created by Zappa.
A digital version will also be released of the Super Deluxe Edition with all 105 tracks. The Dolby Atmos mix of the album will be on supportive streaming services.
Two vinyl editions are being released for the 60th anniversary of Freak Out!
A five-LP 180-gram vinyl set will be offered, featuring the pre-master mix, the mono master, live tracks from the 1966 Fillmore shows, demos, as well as the booklet with rare photos, new essays, and the litho print.
A 180-gram two-LP pressing of the original album on multi-color vinyl is also being put out that will contain the 2025 remastered tracks with faithfully restored packaging including a gatefold jacket. Both vinyl versions will include the Freak Out! Hot Spots Map.
The Mothers of Invention’s Freak Out! was originally released in June 1966 on Verve Records and embodied the counter-culture movement of the era with its scrapping of musical conventions and biting social satire.
