Yves Guillemot, the CEO of French gaming giant Ubisoft appears to have cooled the rhetoric behind the company’s NFT gaming project Quartz, noting in a recent interview that it was merely in “research mode” concerning Web3 tech integrations. It’s a relatively different take from other Ubisoft execs in the past, including chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet who in October stated that blockchain integrations will enable users to own and earn content and the firm wants to “be one of the key players here.” During a Sept. 10 interview with gamesindustry.biz, Guillemot appears to be walking some of those comments back, emphasizing that at this stage, Ubisoft is primarily looking to discover how NFTs can be applied to games and whether they will benefit gamers or not. “We are very much ...

Poilievre has been a member of the Conservative Party since 2003, first winning office in the 2004 election. He has since served as a Member of Parliament for seven terms and held various roles including Shadow Minister for Finance and Minister of Employment and Social Development. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves late last month declared a state of emergency for Jackson after torrential rains and flooding of the Pearl River overwhelmed the water treatment plant there, creating dangerously low water and knocking out delivery of clean drinking water to tens of thousands of residents. President Joe Biden quickly followed by issuing an emergency declaration, entitling the state to help and money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Since then, the Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District has begun performing an assessment of pumps at the O.B. Curtis water treatment plant, the facility at the center of the crisis. The city’s water system has for years been the target of EPA enforcement, with the agency issuing emergency orders and notices of noncompliance and flag...

Cryptocurrency trading platform Abra said it was “in the process of” establishing a United States-based state-chartered bank allowing clients to deposit digital assets. In a Monday announcement, Abra said the bank, named Abra Bank, would be regulated to operate within the U.S. and give customers the ability to use digital assets in seemingly the same way as fiat at traditional banks. The company also planned to launch Abra International, a digital asset-focused business based outside the U.S. “The best way to become the default Web3 wallet and crypto bank for everyone is by embracing a global regulatory framework that provides for transparency, oversight, security, and agency,” said Abra. We have some BIG news. Today we’re announcing the formation of Abra Bank and the launch of Abra Boost,...
United States-based trade group Blockchain Association announced Monday that it had formed a political action committee, to be called BA PAC, thus joining an industry trend to attempt to exert greater influence on candidates as they approach the midterm elections in November. The Blockchain Association, founded in 2019, has 90 members, according to its website, which include many of the leading names in the industry. Binance is a notable exception, as it withdrew from the association in April to lobby Congress on its own. The association’s stated aim is “to educate policymakers, courts, law enforcement, and the public about crypto networks[,] ledgers and the need for regulatory clarity.” Association director Kristin Smith said in a tweet: “BA PAC is a bat signal for lawmakers: crypto is he...
The White House will give Podesta a team within the Executive Office of the President under the newly created White House Office on Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation. The order emphasized the new office, working in tandem with the climate policy office, would help speed clean energy deployment, reduce the cost of energy efficient appliances, boost U.S. domestic manufacturing that would create more jobs, put electric vehicles on the road and lower energy costs. Scientists and activists have warned that the White House must not squander the law’s opportunities because nations are far off from meeting global climate targets to keep temperatures in check, and U.S. progress — given its status as the world’s largest economy and historical contributor to climate change — is crucial. But ...
Stars like Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa keep getting sued for posting paparazzi pictures of themselves to social media. That might seem unfair, but the law just isn’t on their side. Cyrus became the latest celebrity to face such accusations on Friday when photographer Robert Barbera filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the star, claiming she reposted his 2020 photo that showed her waving to onlookers to Instagram without a license. If that sounds familiar, it should: the same photographer filed a very similar lawsuit against Dua Lipa in June, similarly accusing her of violating his copyrights by posting one of his photos to social media. This doesn’t seem fair. Why can he sue celebrities over images of themselves? For celebrities who are hounded by paparazzi, it may seem only fair th...
A report from blockchain analytics platform Nansen highlights 5 entities that hold 64% of staked Ether (ETH) ahead of Ethereum’s highly anticipated Merge with the Beacon Chain. Ethereum’s shift from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake is set to take place in the coming days after final updates and shadow forks have bee completed in early September. The key component of The Merge sees miners no longer used as validators, replaced by stakers that commit ETH to maintain the network. Nansen’s report highlights that just over 11% of the total circulating ETH is staked, with 65% liquid and 35% illiquid. There are a total of 426,000 validators and some 80,000 depositors, while the report also highlights a small group of entities that command a significant portion of staked ETH. Three major crypt...
Bitcoin (BTC) has rebounded by 20% to almost $22,500 since Sept. 7. But bull trap risks abound in the long run as Elon Musk and Cathie Wood sound an alarm over a potential deflation crisis. Cathie Wood: “Deflation in the pipeline” The Tesla CEO tweeted over the weekend that a major Federal Reserve interest rate hike could increase the possibility of deflation. In other words, Musk suggests that the demand for goods and services will fall in the United States against rising unemployment. A major Fed rate hike risks deflation — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 9, 2022 Typically, rate hikes have been bad for Bitcoin this year. In context, the period of the Fed raising its benchmark rates from near zero in March 2022 to 2.25%–2.50% in August 2022 has coincided wi...
