Why Grammys’ ‘World Music’ Category Name Change Was a Long Time Coming

I remember being really confused the first time I heard the term “world music.” I was looking up past Grammy award winners and noticed the genre title. “Isn’t all music technically world music?” I thought. “I’ve never heard anyone describe themselves as a ‘world music’ artist.” It was almost as if the title was code for “weird” or “fringe” and seemed to designate that the music was of a lower tier than other “non-world” genres. It wouldn’t get screen time, attention or press anywhere at the level of the other categories. It was especially confusing to me because I’m of Haitian and Guyanese descent and grew up listening to a lot of these “world” artists and songs throughout my life. These “world” artists filled massive arenas around the globe and sold millions of records, yet th...

Sara Bareilles Shades Candace Owens While Supporting Harry Styles’ ‘Vogue’ Cover

More celebrities have stepped up to support Harry Styles’ Vogue shot — a historic first in which the skirt-wearing Styles became the first solo man to appear on the cover in the magazine’s 127-year run —  saying any questions about his “manliness” say more about the questioner than Harry. “One of the ‘manliest’ (barf) men I know said, ‘if Harry Styles in a dress scares you, it’s more about you than about him’… my kind of ‘man,’” tweeted Sara Bareilles. The comment about the gender-blending shoot came in response to Trump-supporting conservative commentator Candace Owens’ retrograde screed against the Vogue spread, saying “bring back manly men” and calling Styles’ looks in the p...

Tiananmen Square Revisited

In 1989, Chinese students and workers rose up against political repression and occupied Tiananmen Square in downtown Beijing. After a few weeks of hopefulness, Premier Deng Xaoping resorted to extreme measures to quell any potential nationwide workers’ revolution. He ordered Chinese soldiers to turn their guns on their own people, causing a bloody massacre.  SPIN sent reporter Mikali Myron to Beijing and she stayed in the square until the end, and filed a highly personal account for our August, ‘89 issue. This is an update on what happened to the chief protagonists of the uprising. What made 1 MILLION people, mostly students, crowd into a huge plaza in downtown Beijing, with no food, sanitation, running water, or other comforts, many choosing hunger strikes as their protest, while the worl...
