Source: Johnny Louis / Getty At the top of 2020, NLE Choppa was in a different state of mind. Granted, none of us knew what to expect as the year wore on, but as we were all forced to slow down and be still, the Memphis rapper found himself embracing the quiet moments. “I’m a helper and I’m a healer.”—NLE Choppa From time to time, anyone can catch Choppa online, either tending to his garden, making a vegan breakfast or meditating in his backyard. In October, he tweeted: “I didn’t change. I just found myself.” Two months before in August, the rapper released his debut studio album Top Shotta, a nod to his Jamaican heritage on his mother’s side, but admits that by the end of recording it, he felt drained and listless. The fiery, devil-may care energy of Choppa’s music simply wasn’t mov...

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Some of the best art to emerge from Black artists has been under periods of duress and pressure, and a new release from Salaam Remi adds to that tradition. The celebrated producer has released a new body of work, Black On Purpose, featuring some of the best talents across Hip-Hop, R&B, and beyond. Black On Purpose could very well be seen as an extension of the Black Power era of musical releases that reflected the times, harkening back to artists like Marvin Gaye, and James Brown who used their music to convey the feelings and frustrations of the people. Under Remi’s capable guidance, Black On Purpose achieves this goal several times over in one of 2020’s best releases to date. “We couldn’t gather in the way we were used to when we needed each other most, R...
Classic Scottish alt rockers Teenage Fanclub announced the release of Endless Arcade, their first LP since 2016’s Here, with the premiere single, “Home.” Endless Arcade will drop on March 5, 2021. “I think of an endless arcade as a city that you can wander through, with a sense of mystery, an imaginary one that goes on forever,” says Raymond McGinley, one-half of the band’s songwriters for this album, in a statement. “When it came to choosing an album title, it seemed to have something for this collection of songs.” The group’s other songwriter, Norman Blake, added, “We’re all getting older, and you can’t help but think about mortality, especially when you’re being creative and reflecting on your life.” A press statement further clarifies that the album “walks a beautifully poise...
Live music — at least the way we remember going to gigs in the “before” time — might be even closer to coming back than initially thought. After Pfizer announced that early results for a new COVID-19 vaccine presented a 90% efficacy rate during its first set of trials earlier this week, Ticketmaster began working on a safety plan that would use smartphones. The phones would be used to whether verify concertgoers were vaccinated or had tested negative for COVID-19 over the previous 72 hours, Billboard reported. “In order for live events to return, technology and science are going to play huge roles in establishing integrated protocols so that fans, artists, and employees feel safe returning to venues,” says Marianne Herman, co-founder and principal reBUILD20, told Billboard. ReBUILD20 is a ...

A Los Angeles court denied Britney Spears‘s bid to remove her father, Jamie Spears, from the conservatorship of her estate on Tuesday (November 10), outlets are reporting. Through his conservatorship, Jamie has controlled Spears’s assets, business affairs, and estate since 2008, though he stepped down in 2019 due to health concerns. The latest ruling is largely seen as a blow to Britney’s career, a view her lawyer made explicit. “My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father,” Britney’s attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, reportedly told the court, per Variety. “She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.” BBC News reports that Britney’s lawyer mentioned how she has no “viable working relationship...
