Source: JIM WATSON / Getty Joe Biden is stacking votes and W’s. On early Friday morning (Nov. 6), the former Vice President moved ahead in votes in both Georgia and Pennsylvania after being basically down since Election Day on Tuesday. At the time of this post, Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris are ahead in Pennsylvania by 5,587 according to the New York Times. The votes that put him ahead were from Philadelphia ballots. In Georgia, the Biden and Harris ticket is ahead by 1,097 votes. The county that finally put Biden ahead in GA came from Clayton County aka College Park, which sits to the south of Atlanta. The reason for Biden’s leads are squarely thanks to high voter turnout from Democrats and specifically to Black people as the ballots in his favor came from predominantly Black counties in b...

Drakeo the Ruler Released From Prison, Strikes “Sudden” Plea Deal

Source: @IamMRMOSELY / Twitter If there’s one good thing that has come out of the 2020 Election cycle, it’s Drakeo the Ruler’s prison release.  The South Central rapper accepted a “sudden” plea deal from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office on Monday after serving more than one year behind bars.  Drakeo, born Darrell Caldwell, was found not guilty of murder and attempted murder in July 2019.  Unfortunately, ties to his Stinc Team rap group kept him behind bars awaiting trial for criminal gang conspiracy and shooting from a motor vehicle.  However, the rapper was offered a sudden plea deal offer for time served after L.A. County DA Jackie Lacey’s lost her bid for re-election to George Gascón on Election Day (Nov. 3).  Jeff Weiss, a reporter who has closely fol...

The 51-year-old politician closed the race with 60% of the vote against Republican Rikin Mehta on Election Day (Nov. 3).  After the news dropped, he headed to social media thanking his constituents for their trust and support in his leadership.  “New Jersey, I’m once again humbled by the faith you’ve placed in me,” he said on Twitter. “Thank you for standing with me and allowing me the honor of representing my home state in Washington. Our work is far from finished.” Dawson, 41, immediately followed up with a reply.  “Well done my love. We’re blessed to have your grace and brilliance represent us.” We...

Late Civil Rights Icon John Lewis’s Former County Divinely Flips Georgia Blue

Source: Jessica McGowan / Getty Former House Representative John Lewis may have passed, but it’s clear his spirit lives on after his former county helped deal a devastating blow to current sitting President, Donald Trump‘s campaign. On Friday (Nov 6) the civil rights icon’s county in Georgia tipped Democratic nominee Joe Biden into the lead in the state as mail-in ballots, continued to be counted from the area. As previously reported, at about 4:30 a.m. on Friday, a release of ballots counted in Clayton County gave Biden a lead of 917 votes in the Southern state, pushing his lead out to 1,096 votes after another batch of ballot results came in at about 6 a.m. As the votes continued to be counted from surrounding counties including Fulton, DeKalb, and Chatham, helped boost Biden ahead of Tr...

James Blake Covers Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed” on Fallon: Watch

Back in September, James Blake released his official studio cover of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed”. On Thursday, the UK crooner brought his acclaimed rendition to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Broadcasting outside from a wooded area, Blake performed the Blonde cut on his trusty piano (and still with his blonde-dyed hair). The whole thing was wonderfully serene, especially with the sunlight peeking through the canopy of trees around him. Blake, of course, is intimately acquainted with “Godspeed”, as he provided both production and arrangement on Ocean’s original version. Watch the video replay below. Blake has been on a bit of a covers streak since the pandemic began. In recent months, he’s also tackled Nirvana’s “Come as You Are”, Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You”, Radiohead’s ...

Chappelle’s Show Episode Left off Netflix, HBO Max Due to Ron Jeremy Cameo

At the top of the month, all three seasons of Chappelle’s Show made their way to Netflix and HBO Max. However, fans of Dave Chappelle’s legendary sketch program quickly noticed that one of the show’s 28 episodes was missing. According to The Daily Beast, Season 2’s sixth episode, “The Internet & Moment in the Life of Lil Jon”, was indeed left off of the streaming services because of a cameo from former adult film star Ron Jeremy. The episode in question finds Chappelle envisioning what the Internet would be like if it were a physical location like a mall. After raiding the “Free Downloads” store for music, he meets Jeremy, who invites him into the world of pornography. The trouble is that Jeremy, who moonlights as a standup comic and reality TV presence, was recently charged with over ...

Johnny Depp Fired From Fantastic Beasts Franchise in Light of Abuse Allegations

Amid his ongoing legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard over alleged misconduct, Johnny Depp has been forced out of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. In a note posted to Instagram on Friday, Depp said he was “asked to resign by Warner Bros.” and “I have respected and agreed to that request.” Depp played the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the first two installments of the Harry Potter spin-off series, and had been set to return for the franchise’s upcoming third film. Upon filing for divorce from Depp in 2016, Heard accused her ex-husband of abusive behavior. Depp vehemently denied the allegations, contending instead that it was Heard who was abusive against him. The former couple eventually reached a settlement out of court, but in early 2019 Depp sued Heard for defamation after she published...

Tom Petty’s Last Dance

Some of the most shocking nights in music are the ones that seem the most normal. My parents were in town for my son’s third birthday in September 2017. Ho-hum. Unbeknownst — or rather, very unbeknownst to me – my mother’s favorite singer-songwriter, Tom Petty, was playing a three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl to close out his 40th-anniversary tour. The tickets were long sold out — and if you’re familiar with the Bowl, for a decent ticket, you know it’s going to set you back at least three digits.  My mother didn’t deserve that. I volunteered to cover the show for my former infernal freelance rag, OC Weekly. I asked for the final night. Besides, on this tour, Petty and the Heartbreakers performed the same songs at each show. The Arroyo Seco festival took place earlier that year by...

The Most Influential Artists: #30 Spice Girls

As part of our 35th-anniversary, we’re naming the most influential artists of the past 35 years. Today, we’re at #30. From London, UK, here are the Spice Girls. CREDIT: Paul Bergen/Redferns In the early 1990s, Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and Bratmobile ushered in the feminist punk riot grrrl movement. But when the Spice Girls released their breakthrough single, “Wannabe,” in 1996, the English five-piece — Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Horner (Ginger Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) — brought that ethos to the mainstream. With the group’s popularity came an electric mantra of “girl power” and a branded style of female empowerment that would define an era.  Beyond music, the Spice Girls were everywhere — from movies ...
