Heavy Culture: Living Colour on Their Upbringings, Pandemic Life, and Getting Out the Vote

Heavy Culture is a monthly column from journalist Liz Ramanand, focusing on artists of different cultural backgrounds in heavy music as they offer their perspectives on race, society, and more as it intersects with and affects their music. The latest installment of this column features an interview with the Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun, guitarist Vernon Reid and bassist Doug Wimbish. Since 1985, Living Colour have blended rock, metal, and blues to form a sound all their own, inspiring many artists along the way. This year, the rock pioneers are celebrating 30 years of their sophomore album, Time’s Up, which yielded such hits as “Type”, “Love Rears Its Ugly Head”, and “Elvis Is Dead”. This edition of “Heavy Culture” spans several months, as we first caught up with the members of Livin...

10 Timeless Political Songs for Election Day

This feature originally ran November 2008 and has since been edited for Election Day 2020. Everyone hates politics. Election Day is among us, though. So, it doesn’t matter if you get nauseous any time you flip by C-SPAN or that you once had an asthma attack during your eighth-grade field trip to Washington, D.C. Truth be told, the country’s future is on the line, and it’s your civil duty to get out there and cast a ballot. As a source of inspiration, we scrambled together a cliché collection of the best political anthems out there. Because, really, sometimes you just need to hear the hits again to feel good about something — it’s sort of like how every sports team relies on the same three or four songs to get everyone in the mood. Editors’ Picks So, slap on those headphones, pump up ...

Cardi B Puffs 3 Cigarettes At Once To Cope With Election Stress

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz Got a lighter?  Well, hand one to Cardi B because watching the election has her super stressed out. The “WAP” rapper was spotted on Instagram sharing her Election Day journey with fans on Tuesday (Nov. 3) as the nation braced for the hot mess that comes with the 2020 Presidential race.  Standing outside in a black fur coat, fresh cornrows, and laid baby hairs, the Bronx native stood close to the camera with a frustrated expression on her face. After shaking her head, the rapper raises not one, but three lit cigarettes to her mouth and deeply inhales without coughing.  A few seconds later, she looks away and exhales the smoke from her lungs without uttering a word.   “How these elections got me watching these states turn red &...

Mississippi Voters Approve A New State Flag Over Old Confederate Banner

Source: Tasos Katopodis / Getty While there’s still a good possibility that the Racist-In-Chief will remain in office for another four years (or longer), Mississippi is still looking to distance itself from it’s prejudice past and has decided to ditch it’s most blatantly racist piece of history. According to Raw Story, the people of the Hospitality State voted in a new measure which would change the state flag from that confederate battle emblem to a new banner which would feature the magnolia flower. Donald Trump and his cult of a political party isn’t gonna like that one bit. The old flag was retired over the summer, as the US exploded with the biggest protests in decades against racism and police brutality. The ongoing movement for racial justice in the US also prompted the removal of s...

Big Wins Beyond The Presidency: Meet The Trailblazing Women Elected To Congress

There is still a long way to go until the 2020 presidential election is decided. Both candidates are up against tight margins as of this writing, trading victories in key battleground states. President Donald Trump took Florida on election night, but former Vice President Joe Biden flipped Arizona, a formerly Republican-leaning state, and took Wisconsin the following morning. It’s tense, to be sure, and in moments of stress, it might be helpful to remember the silver linings. This Election Day proved the importance of down-ballot races, with many forward-thinking and diverse candidates making history with victories at the state level. For example, more than 570 LGBTQ+ candidates appeared on the ballot this year, according to the Victory Fund, and many secured their seats on Tuesday in the ...

Thurston Moore on New LP, 2020 Election, Meeting Our Publication’s Founder

Calling from England a few days before the release of his new LP, By the Fire, Thurston Moore admits the dire situation of the U.S. homeland occupies his mind over anything else. And this is before Trump caught COVID-19.  “For me, it’s not so much Biden versus Trump — it’s us versus Trump,” the guitarist tells SPIN. “Right now, this is the main conversation on the table because it’s a serious, serious time. You have leaders putting their heads in the sand while the Earth is fucking being burned up. The health of the planet is the primary situation on hand, and they’re in denial of it. That to me is the most major issue.” If you’ve been listening to Moore and his old band Sonic Youth these last 40 years, politics has always been at the forefront for the New York noise-rock greats. It’s...

The Most Influential Artists: #32 Drake

As part of our 35th-anniversary, we’re naming the most influential artists of the past 35 years. Today, we’re at #32. From Toronto, Ontario, Canada, here’s Drake. CREDIT: Paras Griffin/Getty Images You can easily compare Aubrey Graham to one of those automatic baseball-pitching machines. Every throw somehow lands exactly where he wants it.  Drawing from Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak playbook, Drake’s first move was his 2009 breakout So Far Gone, a mixtape that truly “sounded like an album,” as opposed to, well, a mixtape. And while his signature sing-rapping smashes haven’t since found their way onto equally great albums — with Take Care a major exception — Drizzy could be modern music’s most consistent hit-maker. Attempting to even list his top five is impossible — there really is...
