HHW Premiere: Five Steez & Mordecai – A.B.S. [Video]

Source: Five Steez / Five Steez Jamaica is, without doubt, one of the richest cultural hubs in the world and by way of DJ Kool Herc‘s birthright and influence, responsible for the global impact of Hip-Hop music and culture. Kingston’s own Five Steez and Mordecai are adding to their ongoing legacy as leading voices via their take on traditional boom-bap with “A.B.S.” from their latest EP. With Five Steez commanding the microphone duties with confidence, Mordecai’s head-nodding production serves as the foundation of the Jamaican duo’s signature sound, present across their latest set, HeatRockz 2.0. The EP follows the duo’s 2019 full-length Love N Art and is a direct sequel of the pair’s hard-hitting HeatRockz project from 2016. Five doesn’t rely on the expected patois-tinged deejay hybrid st...

An Australian Kebab Shop is Under Investigation for Hosting an Illicit Impromptu Dance Party

Brisbane clubbers looking to grab a late-night shish kebab instead ended up forming a shish ke-mob. You’ll understand that cheesy pun in a moment. Shah Kebabs, a kebab restaurant nestled in a popular Brisbane nightclub district, is currently under investigation for hosting an illicit impromptu dance party amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. According to a number of videos gaining traction on TikTok, many people crammed into the tiny shop in Brisbane’s Brunswick Street Mall on Sunday, August 23rd to gather and dance. Footage obtained by 7NEWS Brisbane shows patrons—the vast majority without masks—ignoring social distancing guidelines in the shop as they party to Danzel’s iconic single “Pump It Up.” Queensland Police Service Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschews...

Nubya Garcia: Source

For new listeners and latecomers, there was no handier introduction to London’s vibrant, bustling jazz scene than Gilles Peterson’s 2018 compilation We Out Here. Curated by the scene’s own breakout star Shabaka Hutchings, the set showcased a new generation of artists melding jazz classicism to Afrobeat, neo-soul, electronic music, and ambient. And no one worked harder than tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia, present on five of the comp’s nine pieces. Hailing from an immigrant family—her mother from Guyana, her father from Trinidad—she grew up in a musical family in the London borough of Camden, starting first on piano and violin before gravitating to a “broken as hell” old clarinet. She came up with other groups like Maisha and the septet Nérija, and she’s remained busy ever since, her presenc...

Kang Daniel Reflects on ‘Magenta’ Album, Teases New Projects & Collaborations

With his deep voice, boy-next-door looks and growing creative flair, Kang Daniel has elevated himself to a top-tier celebrity status that only a handful of artists can ever achieve—even after first finding fame as a key member of insanely popular boy band Wanna One who hit No. 3 on both Billboard‘s Social 50 chart and World Albums chart. After striking out solo and launching his own label last year, the phenomenon became one of the highest-earning and most significant male solo acts in K-pop. But despite a near-instant solo success with his debut Color on Me EP in 2019, the 23-year-old seems more level-headed than most artists of his stature. “I feel more pressure every time I release new music, but it feels good to feel pressure,” Kang tells Billboard. “Releasing a...

James Charles Says He Received ‘Death Threats’ After JoJo Siwa Makeover

James Charles had us “sister shook” last week when he unveiled his latest makeover, replacing JoJo Siwa‘s characteristic bows and glitter for a glam smokey eye. Despite the 17-year-old former Dance Moms star looking gorgeous at the end result, Charles took to Twitter to share that the video’s feedback wasn’t the most positive. [embedded content] The makeup mogul explained that some fans were expecting a celebrity other than Siwa for the makeover, and were disappointed at the reveal. “I said today’s collab was with someone I I [sic] waited two years to work with & I was so excited for and now I’m getting death threats because stan twitter assumed it would be their fav and it wasn’t there are a TON of huge artists I’d love to film with one day, be...

Justin Timberlake Recalls Recording ‘SexyBack’ With Timbaland & How Working With Him Fulfilled His ‘Prophecy’

Justin Timberlake and Timbaland have been cemented in pop music history as a certified hitmaking team, but as a 14-year-old boy, JT thought it was his “prophecy” to work with the megaproducer. In a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Timberlake shared his Essentials Playlist that rewinds through 20 of his biggest hits old and new, from his career-defining No. 1 hit “SexyBack” to his reflective new sound on “Mirrors” to his “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” happy dance anthem from Trolls in 2016. But when it came to “SexyBack,” the 39-year-old hitmaker remembered the pushback he initially received. He told Lowe about the concerns those from the label had about the first single of his 2006 album FutureSex/...

Bette Midler Lines-up the Gags as Republican Convention Gets Underway

Last week, the Democrats held their convention and had Twitter buzzing. Now it’s the Republicans’ turn. The first night of the Republican National Convention took place virtually across the U.S., with speeches from party officials former UN ambassador Nikki Haley. And early on, there was some official business as Republicans officially nominated President Donald Trump for re-election. While the Democrats leaned on star-power from the likes of Billie Eilish and John Legend, and a special shout out from Bruce Springsteen, big names from the music world are conspicuously absent from the Republican lineup. That hasn’t stopped artists and celebrities from stepping in and sharing their thoughts on the RNC, and the party’s message that a national “horror movie” would unfold should Trump lose in N...

ALL THAT REMAINS To Release New Album In Spring 2021

ALL THAT REMAINS vocalist Philip Labonte has confirmed to the FM99 WNOR radio station that the band has commenced the songwriting process for the follow-up to 2018’s “Victim Of The New Disease” album. Asked when fans can expect to see the disc released, he said (see video below): “We’re looking to have a record out, if not first quarter of next year, then early part second quarter, so springtime.” During the same chat, Labonte spoke about how ALL THAT REMAINS‘ new material may be different from its previous efforts. He said: “Our guitar player, Oli Herbert, passed away a couple of years back, so this will be the first record that we write without him. He was a big part of the writing process for so long, it’s gonna definitely have some ...

STRYPER’s MICHAEL SWEET Doesn’t Understand Why ‘People Feel The Need To Post Political Hate’

Michael Sweet of openly Christian rockers STRYPER says that he can’t understand why people “feel the need” to ridicule others for their political beliefs. Sweet made his comments shortly after the Republican National Convention kicked off Monday morning in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a roll call formally nominating Donald Trump to run in the November election. Sweet took to his social media to write: “Why do you think people feel the need to post political hate? I’m trying to figure it out. Constant disdain for people who don’t agree with them. Endless posts about why people should vote for the other party (regardless of what party your affiliated with) and if they don’t they’re embiciles, they’re idiots, they’re bad people. &...

Like The Fearless Hunter – NONEXIST

RATING: 7.5/10 NONEXIST has always been a project that danced in the realm of comfort-food melodeath, whose main creative force has primarily been guitarist Johan Reinholdz — now also a member of DARK TRANQUILLITY. But a large portion of that comfort, from founding through to 2015’s “Throne of Scars”, was from original ARCH ENEMY frontperson Johan Liiva. Reinholdz‘s latest record sees him moving forward as a one-man project, juggling his usual instrumentation duties while also stepping behind the microphone, supplemented by a few guest appearances from a who’s who of the Swedish melodeath scene. There’s still plenty to revel in, though the weight of being a fully one-man project does appear here to be a bit heavy at times, and that weight is accentuated ...

The Octagonal Stairway – PIG DESTROYER

RATING: 8/10 PIG DESTROYER rejoins us with a brief but belligerent EP, following 2018’s full-length “Head Cage”. With “The Octagonal Stairway”, the legendary American grindcore act divides 25 minutes of frantic, unsettling grind into six songs. The grind purists who bemoaned “Head Cage”‘s much more diverse stylings are offered enough cutthroat grind to make them bite their tongues until they bleed. “The Octagonal Stairway” is indeed an icepick to the eardrums, but it’s also reflective of the nuanced and impressively dynamic band they’ve grown into. The depth of sound has increased tremendously since the one-time trio has grown to include Blake Harrison (electronics) — who has been with the band for nearly 15 years at t...
