How Tiny Details Made Almost Famous‘s Brand-New Outfits Look Old (And Iconic)

By Sara Radin “Do you have to be depressed to write a sad song?” teenager William Miller, played by Patrick Fugit, asks rock star Russell Hammond, played by Billy Crudup, backstage. “Do you have to be in love to write a love song? Is a song better when it really happened to you?” The scene in writer-director Cameron Crowe’s 2000 semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous is one of many in which William’s maturity breaks through his youthful exterior and wardrobe (think white t-shirts and misfit jeans). It’s 1973, and William has been given the opportunity of a lifetime — to profile Hammond’s rising band Stillwater for the cover of Rolling Stone. It’s a gig any writer, let alone a 15-year-old, would dream of, and William’s ditched school, along with his overbearing mother, to make it happen. ...

NAPALM DEATH’s BARNEY GREENWAY Reflects On Passing Of JESSE PINTADO: ‘I Miss Him’

In a brand new interview with MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn‘s “No Fuckin’ Regrets With Robb Flynn” podcast, NAPALM DEATH singer Mark “Barney” Greenway reflected on the passing of the band’s guitarist Jesse Pintado. After Flynn brought up the fact that Pintado would get into intense confrontations while intoxicated during NAPALM DEATH‘s 1994 tour with MACHINE HEAD, Greenway said: “By that time, he was pretty much a full-on alcoholic. It took his mind in certain directions. I don’t really wanna judge him and say [anything] negative, but things do open up your mind when you’re [taking various] substances or drink or anything like that. So he got into some actually pretty interesting stuff along the way. But it did get pretty...

FLETCHER on How Quaranting With Her Ex Led To Her Most Honest Music Yet

FLETCHER is quite impulsive. Her new The S(ex) Tapes EP was originally set for a Sept. 18 release, but she couldn’t wait any longer and surprise-dropped it over a week early. “I just felt like it was pretty on-brand for me to leak my own sex tape,” the pop singer/songwriter tells SPIN on Sept. 9 — the afternoon of the new release — with a cheeky laugh. “I wanted to be able to just share it with people as soon as possible.” There aren’t any rules when it comes to FLETCHER’s music (born Cari Elise Fletcher), whose career kicked off with 2015’s viral hit “War Paint.” The artist attributes it to giving “way less fucks” in every aspect of her life. “I used to give way too many and it messes with your mental health,” she says. “I’ve taken on this new attitude, especially over the last couple of ...

Eddie Vedder has just shared his new single, “Cartography.” But what makes this particular song a little extra special is that he’s released not one, but two versions of the track. “Cartography (Nick Zinner RFK remix)” is the Pearl Jam leader’s contribution to Sub Pop Singles Club Vol. 5,” and proceeds from the song will be donated to Fair Fight, which pushes “to ensure a free, fair and secure election in 2020″ — a cause Pearl Jam have been fighting for some time now. The new version of “Cartography” features “spoken word” in the form of a speech from Democratic senator Robert F. Kennedy. “Listening to the speech delivered by Bobby Kennedy in regards to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. 50 years ago,” Vedder said in a statement, “you are reminded that once again we are at a momen...

ViacomCBS has struck a deal to sell its CNET unit to Red Ventures for $500 million. The transaction, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020, is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. CBS acquired CNET, which offers consumer electronics product reviews and news, in 2008 for $1.8 billion. Since the recombination of Viacom and CBS, the new ViacomCBS has been selling off non-core assets to reduce debt and free up financial fire power for expansions in the streaming space and other core businesses. The company, led by CEO Bob Bakish, also has put on the auction block CBS’ longtime Manhattan headquarters Black Rock and book publisher Simon & Schuster. “Red Ventures believes in the power of premium content from trusted brands that help ...
