RATING: 10/10 It has been five years since NAPALM DEATH released its last album, “Apex Predator — Easy Meat”. The longest period between their releases is finally over, as the forefathers of grindcore have returned with their sixteenth full-length release, “Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism”. The passionate, sociopolitical outlook of frontman Barney Greenway and company was inevitable and almost seems requisite in the face of the current state of global turbulence. The wait has been worth it, to say the least. “Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism” is the best album the Birmingham bruisers have released in years, if not their entire career. The album touches upon the various eras of the band’s storied career. It’s overflowing with the ...
Corey Taylor has blasted people who are defiantly skeptical of mask wearing, saying they are posing a risk to themselves and to all those around them. The SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR frontman made the comment during an appearance on the latest episode of Dean Delray‘s “Let There Be Talk” podcast. Asked how his hometown of Las Vegas has handled the coronavirus pandemic, Taylor said: “It burned up again, because our mayor is a dipshit. This thing is gonna fucking — it’s gonna keep doing that until it evens out, man. It’s gonna keep doing it until we get a vaccine, to be honest, or at least something that can prevent. “Vegas, it’s up and down. There are still a bunch of fucking mooks with no masks on at the casinos,” he continued. “And, ...
HBO has announced a three-season renewal for its award-winning satirical news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The new deal will keep John Oliver dissecting socio-political shortcomings and feuding with Connecticut towns through at least 2023. “We’re all extremely happy to be able to continue to do our show on HBO for another three years, or until the end of the world, whichever comes first,” said Oliver in a press statement. Since Oliver moved from The Daily Show correspondent to premium cable host in 2014, Last Week Tonight has earned two Peabody Awards and an astounding 16 Emmys. That includes four last year, including taking home the Outstanding Variety Talk Series trophy for the fourth year running. It will have a chance to extend that streak to five at this year’s ceremony, w...
Next month, The Mountain Goats will drop their second album of the year, Getting Into Knives. A first preview came via “As Many Candles As Possible”, which featured contributions from Al Green’s own organist Charles Hodges. The indie outfit is now sharing another single in “Get Famous”. While most wish for popularity and success, The Mountain Goats are making us seriously reconsider these lofty dreams. The new song encourages listeners to follow their ambitions, but paints fame as something not at all worth coveting. Or as a press release succinctly puts it, frontman John Darnielle sings the title “as if it were a curse.” “Cold, grey world/ All these obedient sheep/ They act like they know, but they’re all sound asleep/ You arrive on the scene like a message from God/ Listen to the people ...
Because we’re all dead and this is hell, Donald Trump would like Joe Rogan to moderate a four-hour presidential debate. Rogan himself pitched the debate format on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast with retired MMA fighter Tim Kennedy. Kennedy asked Rogan what his approach would be, and Rogan said, “First of all, I would want nobody else in the room. Just the three of us. And I would want to stream it live so no one can edit it.” So far, so expected, but Kennedy and Rogan act as if they’ve invented something remarkable. “Why can’t we have that?” Kennedy asked. “We should have that, it’s 2020,” Rogan replied. “We have the ability to have that. We’re not talking about 1979.” Nobody pointed out they had just invented television. Afterwards, Kennedy tweeted abo...
This past weekend marked the 58th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s famous Moon Speech, given in Houston to promote America’s Apollo program to put a man on the moon. To coincide with the occasion, Showtime has released the first teaser for its space-themed comedy series Moonbase 8, starring John C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Armisen. Due to premiere sometime this fall, the TV show follows three subpar astronauts who live and train at NASA’s Moon Base Simulator in Arizona. The goal is to one day qualify for a lunar mission, but their lack of expertise proves to be more than just a minor hurdle. Today’s teaser trailer shows us some of the basic exercises and tasks assigned to this goofy trio — and how they’re all so easily botched. Let’s just say JFK probably wouldn’t wan...
Source: Jacopo Raule / Getty Griselda Records has transformed its consistent underground grind into a major label partnership all while releasing music at a rapid clip. In a 2019 interview, Westside Gunn spoke about his crew’s productivity in comparison to TDE and Dreamville in what some thought was in an offensive manner, but he says that’s not the case. Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, and Benny The Butcher, the core members of Griselda, joined Elliott Wilson’s Rap Radar with Brian “B-Dot” Miller for a wide-ranging chat about the crew’s rise, their proper Shady Records debut album WWCD, and more. When comparing the crew’s output and quality against the aforementioned labels, Gunn’s passion and confidence boasts were apparently misunderstood as a sign of arrogance. “If you’re gonna name...
Source: Will Newton / Getty Over the weekend the Washington Wizard’s franchise point guard, John Wall, had social media abuzz when video of him attending a Brooklyn party and throwing up Blood gang signs with his homies hit the Internets. While many heads on social media were shocked at John Wall’s gang affiliation, NBA fans who follow the game for real are aware that the all-star has had a penchant for throwing up those same signs on the court during games. So when video of a shirtless Wall politicking at a New York City soiree and throwing up his hood emerged, we weren’t all that surprised. Heck, many Knick fans took it as a sign that he’d end up in the orange and blue (he’s not). Still, for whatever reason, Wall has decided to take to Twitter to issue an apology for making a “mistake” a...
Source: Gary Miller / Getty Chance The Rapper is about to make some ‘Lo heads jealous. The Chicago rapper will be performing tonight (Sept. 14)(sort of) at the Ralph Lauren flagship store in Chicago. Today, Chance and Ralph Lauren announced their collab that features a special digital performance on at 9:00pm ET. The “pre-recorded live performance” (hey, that’s who they describe it) will get the global streaming treatment on Chance‘s and Ralph Lauren’s social channels. The “No Problem” rapper stays getting spotted in some clutch Ralph Lauren pieces (he also attended Ralph Lauren’s 50th Anniversary Fashion Show), so this move only makes sense. “Music and fashion to me have always been interlinked,” said Chance via a press statement. “Ralph Lauren has always been one of my favorite des...
Source: Prince Williams / Getty Looks like after all the hoopla and bragging he’s been doing since being released from prison, Tekashi 6ix9ine‘s post-snitching album Tattle Tales has officially flopped and his rival, Lil Durk is reveling in the fact that Hip-Hop’s “Henry Hill” isn’t reaping the rewards of a federal informant. Originally expected to land at the top of the Billboard charts with at least 150,000 units moved, the 7-day sales of Tekashi’s latest project show that his music just isn’t hitting the same with his fans as it was when he was rolling with Bloods who were extorting and beating him up behind the scenes. Even with the millions of views that his music videos have been racking up and the ridiculous things Tekashi’s been doing and posting on social media, Tattle Tales have ...
Talk about flushing your money down the toilet. This weekend, a collector dished out $1,152 for a yellow Rolling Stones’ tongue logo toilet seat cover during an auction of bassist Bill Wyman’s archival belongings. The purchase via Julien’s Auctions made a splash in the history books, with the cover becoming the most expensive ever sold at an auction. Wyman’s auction also set a few other records. His 1969 Fender Mustang Bass with a Competition Orange finish — designed by Leo Fender before he left the company — went for $384,000, the highest a bass guitar has ever sold for. Wyman’s 1962 VOX AC30 Normal model amplifier also took home an unexpected victory for most expensive amp ever sold at an auction, landing for $106,250. For some, fame isn’t everything. The Mountain Goats latest single, “Get Famous,” is a prime example as to why. On the track that was released on Monday, lead singer John Darnielle sings of fame as something that maybe isn’t the ideal scenario. “Light up the sky like a comet/Make yourself want to vomit/Shine like a cursed star/Show everybody exactly who you are,” he sings over the horn-heavy soulful cut. the day I wrote this song I knew the wait to share it would be excruciating AND IT HAS BEEN but today! is! the! day! across all platforms right now! Get Famous! https://t.co/8wxRpxf9h4 — The Mountain Goats (@mountain_goats) September 14, 2020 The indie veterans — which consists of Darnielle, Matt Douglas, Peter Hughes, and Jon Wurster — explore fame and plenty of other themes on t...
