Venerated house producer and DJ Maceo Plex has released a new single called “Nu World,” teaming up with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for a timely philanthropic endeavor ahead of the impending US federal election. The menacing tech house tune arrives by way of Maceo Plex’s own Ellum Audio banner and is oozing with the sinister kinetic flair that helped to catapult him to the upper echelon of the genre. He will be directing funds raised from the sales of the track to the ACLU in their efforts to combat voter suppression. Along with the single also comes a shocking piece of accompanying artwork, which features a person pointing a gun at their head in a lake with an American flag draped over their face. You can listen to “Nu World” belo...
As the entertainment world continues to confront its ugly history of racism, another prominent artist has come forward to apologize for wearing blackface. In a series of tweets posted Tuesday, David Byrne expressed remorse for wearing black and brown face in a 1984 promotional video for the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense concert film. In the clip in question, Byrne portrays various characters that interview Byrne proper — and some of those are people of color. “To watch myself in the various characters, including black and brown face, I acknowledge it was a major mistake in judgement that showed a lack of real understanding,” the British-American musician wrote on Twitter this afternoon. “It’s like looking in a mirror and seeing someone else- you’re not, or were not, the person you thoug...
Truth is stranger than fiction, they say, and the secret life of Marisol Nichols is at least as wild as anything on Riverdale. One of the stars of the CW series, she has spent years as a real-life undercover sex trafficking agent, and her unusual personal life has inspired a new TV show. The 46-year-old actress revealed her second job in a gripping April profile in Marie Claire. Written by Erika Hayasaki and called “The Hollywood Vigilante”, it follows Nichols on a sting operation involving an unnamed sheriff’s department and at least one FBI agent. Nichols talks on the phone with would-be child predators, stammering and squeaking, pretending to be a preteen. At other times, she plays a junkie mother desperate to pimp out her children. That operation leads to the arrests of ...
One of the more talked-about genre films out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Possessor. The latest feature from Brandon Cronenberg — yes, the son of that Cronenberg — hits select theaters and in drive-ins on October 9th. Today, Neon has dropped a brand new trailer that promises an uncut version of the film. Featuring an A-list cast that includes Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film follows corporate assassins who use brain implants to transfer their minds into other bodies to go after high-profile targets. In his Sundance review, our own Clint Worthington wrote, “Like the best of his father’s works, Possessor is meant to provoke and prod at our deepest notions of self and our insecurities about the fleshy meat-bags we find ourselve...
In lieu of traditional shows, Nashville’s iconic Ryman Auditorium has been regularly livestreaming a concert series called Live at the Ryman. Today, the venue announced that it will reopen its doors for the first time since March to allow a limited audience to physically attend these events. The exciting news comes as Music City continues to ease its coronavirus restrictions. Per Mayor John Cooper’s four-phase reopening plan, event spaces can now operate at a third of their capacity or 125 people maximum, as long as social distancing and mask-wearing are enforced. For the Ryman, that means it will be able to host 125 ticketed guests at each of its Live at the Ryman indoor showing, with concertgoers seated safely apart from another. Other health guidelines, including masks for attendee...
It was love at first ride — until one unlucky passenger got ghosted by her driver. The season premiere of Ghosted: Love Gone Missing — airing Wednesday at 9/8c — will feature a woman named Joanna and her complicated relationship that began in, of all places, an Uber. “I fell in love with my Uber share ride driver named Aaron,” the single mother from New Jersey tells hosts Rachel Lindsay and Travis Mills in the first-ever virtual episode. “We met March 2019. He was so cute when I first met him. I liked his vibe.” She continued: “We had to go pick up my child from school. He met my son that same day. He was very talkative, handsome.” And that’s not all — Joanna goes on to say she had Aaron did some “freaky things” ...
Source: MANDEL NGAN / Getty The shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc. has sparked the usual debate over the use of police force and how race might play a significant part in how it is administered. President Donald Trump, speaking about the Blake shooting, took an unusual stance by comparing the officer who shot Blake seven times in the back to someone having a bad day on the golf course. In a new interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham that aired Monday (August 31), President Trump offered some remarks about the Blake shooting, which has become yet another crusade for national law enforcement reform. However, Trump both decried and seemingly defended the actions of the officers that confronted Blake last week which led to the incident witnessed by Blake’s children. “They can do 10...

Source: Icon Sportswire / Getty College football is a vital part of the fabric of Southern America, and typically isn’t an arena where political statements are made. However, the University of Alabama football, with head coach Nick Saban in tow, marched on behalf of the Black Lives Matter movement. HALESTORM bassist Josh Smith has defended musicians’ right to speak out on political issues, saying that “it’s important that people use whatever platform they have to provoke debate.” Asked in a new interview with U.K.’s Devils Gate Music about singer-songwriter Jason Isbell catching flak from some fans when he recently voiced his political views on social media, Smith said: “[Music has] always been about protest. And for someone to say ‘just stick to the music’ is so backward. The whole point of music is protest and self-reflection, and seeing things and telling people about them lyrically. I saw this recently with Tom Morello, and I think that someone said the same kind of thing to him, I mean, he has a degree from Harvard in social scienc...
Last month, EVANESCENCE released a new single, “Use My Voice”, which was written to celebrate the power of speaking out in order to promote more justice in the world. The track, featuring contributions from THE PRETTY RECKLESS‘s Taylor Momsen and HALESTORM‘s Lzzy Hale, was chosen by HeadCount in the USA to encourage voters to register, check their registration, or find out about their remote voting options amid the COVID-19 pandemic at UseMyVoice.org. “This song and this moment, for me, is very much about the voices that have been unheard,” EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee told AXS TV‘s “At Home And Social Online” (see video below). “We need everybody to speak up, even the people that aren’t normally politically minded. I’m ...
