To celebrate their 20th “bedroom cover,” Two Minutes to Late Night picked Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” for the series’ latest cover. “Rebel rebel, how could they know? Hot yell, I love you so. It’s a Billy Idol cover and Phil is playing his solo in a tiny child rocket ship tent. We did it, everyone!” the caption of the video said. With musicians getting more comfortable with performing from home, Phil Demmel of Vio-lence brings in his guitar solo in a fun way and shreds from inside a spaceship-shaped tent. Myke Terry of Volumes took vocal duties. Havok bassist Brandon Bruce, Lee Jowono of Potion, Ben Koller from Converge and Mutoid Man and All Pigs Must Die took their respective musical duties. And Jordan Olds as GW Arsneio Hall returned to round out the band. Two Minutes to Late Night has al...
It seemed too good to be true: Björk playing four live acoustic shows in front of an actual crowd this year. Well, it was. The Icelandic singer’s long-awaited orchestral show series — titled Björk Orkestral – Live from Reykjavík in Harpa — is postponed until January and February 2021, according to Iceland Airwaves. This is not its first time they’re being pushed back, either. The Harpa Hall shows were originally scheduled to kick off Aug. 9, got pushed to late August and then even further to September. “The new dates are January 17th, 24th, 31st and February 7th,” a statement from Iceland Airwaves read. “This is because we can’t trust that the newly imposed restrictions will be be lifted in time for the shows and we always want to prioritize the health and safety o...
By Harron Walker Doja Cat beamed down from some hot pink alien lady planet for her live performance of “Say So” and “Like That” at the 2020 Video Music Awards on Sunday night, and I, for one, welcome our new TikTokina overlordess. Give in to Doja Cat! All! Hail! Her! Dressed (well, in a sense) in a barely-there pink champagne bodysuit featuring strategically placed light-up gem-encrusted accouterments — looking not unlike what I imagine Britney Spears’s sparkly, regular champagne-colored bodysuit from the 2000 VMAs’ final form would look like — the 21-year-old Los Angeles-born artist kicked off her 2020 VMAs set with “Say So,” a song about waiting for someone you’re hot for to finally make the first move. “It’s about when you go somewhere and you see someone and they don’t appr...
Claws up, Little Monsters: Lady Gaga is going to need help holding all of these Moon People. The 2020 VMAs have blasted off with a one-way ticket to Chromatica, leaving viewers soaking wet with not only the first live performance of Gaga and Ariana Grande’s joyful jam, “Rain on Me,” but Gaga performing a Chromatica medley featuring tracks from the album: “Chromatica II,” “911” and the album’s lead single, “Stupid Love.” In addition to their instantly iconic live performance, Gaga and Grande’s collaboration also won the VMAs for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, and Gaga snatched the Moon Person for Artist of the Year. “This is so exciting, thank you so much,” she told the crowd, sporting one of her many ma...
The 2020 Video Music Awards are officially underway, and like the BET Awards in June, this year’s show has largely gone remote, with plenty of energetic performances taking place across various iconic New York locales. And though the ceremony isn’t centrally located at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as previously planned, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, that hasn’t stopped celebrities from channeling its fabulous spirit. The VMA red carpet has certainly produced iconic looks throughout its history. (Who could forget the cherry-red gown emblazoned with the word “siren” that Lizzo wore last year ahead of her juicy, booty-bouncing performance?) To keep that big peacock energy alive, musicians and actors captured their best outfits v...
In late 2019, The Weeknd pulled a star move by playing himself (though the 2012 version of himself) in Josh and Benny Safdie’s film Uncut Gems. A key scene involves Adam Sandler’s hard-luck character taking a swing at the pop star, though things get broken up before they escalate too wildly. Around that same time, The Weeknd released his vision for indefatigable new single “Blinding Lights,” which chronicled him on a death-wish bender through Los Angeles; he ends up bloody, beaten, and flashing the biggest smile you’ve ever seen. It felt like a sign. Now, that omen has been made clear: “Blinding Lights” just won Video of the Year at the 2020 VMAs. And The Weeknd, who also opened the show with a stratospherically dizzying rendition of the song from ...
On Friday, Calvin Harris and The Weeknd released their funky new single, “Over Now.” Accompanying the song’s debut, days later, is the release of the official music video for the single. The video sees The Weeknd travel through space and time and take on a number of different forms throughout the psychedelic adventure. As he shapeshifts between human, robot, alien, and beyond, viewers are transported to sunsets, synthwave cities, outer space, and more while the collaborative tune guides the way. The visual spectacle pairs well with the smooth, futuristic sound of “Over Now.” While we didn’t know it at the time, the duo teased the theme and imagery of the new video in their release date announcement last week. “Over Now” by Calvin Harris...
Over the weekend, Louis The Child teased the release of their upcoming Candy 2 mixtape. Through a series of Instagram photos, they shared a look at what will seemingly become a visual companion to the mixtape. Not-so-coincidentally, Whethan took to Twitter around the same time and announced that he “may or may not” have a new track with the duo on the way sometime next month. While it’s not quite an official confirmation, fans have already begun to put two and two together, as the trio dropped a collaboration on the last Candy mixtape. To stoke the flames even further, Whethan followed up the original tweet with candy emojis. At the time of writing, there is no specific release date or title for the Whethan and Louis The Child collaboration in question. On the bright side...
HOOKERS & BLOW, the project formed by longtime GUNS N’ ROSES keyboardist Dizzy Reed and QUIET RIOT guitarist Alex Grossi, recently hit the studio to record a covers album, due later this year via Golden Robot Records. Today sees the arrival of the LP’s fourth single, a cover of LED ZEPPELIN‘s “Trampled Underfoot”. Grossi comments: “This song was added into our live set during our first residency at the Whisky A Go Go in 2013 for Frankie Banali (QUIET RIOT) to come down and jam on. When it came time to picking songs to cover for this record, naturally we had this one on the list, with Frankie on drums.” The track, which also features Mike Duda (W.A.S.P.) on bass, was recorded individually and mixed largely in quarantine earlier this year. HOOKER...
British/American metal trio RAVEN has released the official music video for the title track of its upcoming album, “Metal City”. The LP is due on September 18 via SPV/Steamhammer as a CD digipak, LP, bundle version with shirt (only at the Steamhammer shop), download and stream. RAVEN‘s English brothers John (bass, vocals) and Mark Gallagher (guitar) brothers have dedicated the “Metal City” title track to their former hometown. “Newcastle upon Tyne has been referred to as ‘Metal City’ for good reason,” they say. “We come from there for a start. But it’s about a mindset. The people there have a tenacity and an ability to go beyond the limits to get to where they are going.” It’s often small things that can give pow...
Angel Olsen has released her new album Whole New Mess. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. Today’s release follows last year’s stunning All Mirrors, which was one of the best records of 2019 and the 2010s overall. However, whereas that effort was an opulent extravaganza of 11-piece string arrangements and orchestral ambiance, Whole New Mess is a decidedly quieter and more intimate affair. It mostly features early, acoustic renditions of songs off All Mirrors, but also offers some new material like the beautiful title track. It’s technically the first true solo album Olsen’s made since her 2012 debut Half Way Home, but she sounds comfortable as ever in this raw and emotive musical environment. In a revealing interview with Pitchfork, Olsen opened up about how the aforemen...
