The Killers’ Imploding the Mirage Goes All in on a Better Tomorrow: Review

The Lowdown: The Killers have always sounded like a band born to run. Living in the desert of Las Vegas will have that effect. For 16 years, Brandon Flowers and company have been running away down highway skylines, on the backs of hurricanes with Springsteen-like abandon. However, until now, they’ve always seemed to be running from what plagues them — fears, depressions, and the oppressive trappings of Small Town America — instead of toward what inspires them. Despite Flowers’ advice on Wonderful Wonderful single “Run for Cover”, The Killers have always seemed to have one eye looking back over their shoulder as they blow across an expansive wilderness, seeking some sort of escape from it all through romantic, heartland lyricism and rock and roll bombast. 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful caught T...

McCall is in Denial on New Song “Nothing Even Wrong”: Stream

Rising songwriter McCall has shared the lusciously neurotic new song “Nothing Even Wrong”. It’s off her On Self Loathing EP, which has now been given the release date of September 18th. Having offered a couple of previews of On Self Loathing, it’s safe to say that McCall is branching out in a slightly different direction. Her breakout 2019 EP Under the Reign showed a rare ear for melody, but it dressed those toplines in rock-accented pop. As “Nothing Even Wrong” continues to demonstrate, she’s become interested in swelling choruses made of just her voice, as well as cutting-edge studio wizardry. The path she’s going down has been explored by the likes of Imogen Heap and Bon Iver, but her perspective is so different from those artists that her music can’t help but s...

Metallica Open Up About James Hetfield’s Rehab Stint: It Was “Deeply Unsettling”

The members of Metallica have opened up about frontman James Hetfield’s rehab stint in a new interview. The band has also revealed their performance of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” from their upcoming multi-format S&M2 audio/video release, out August 28th. In a conversation with Metal Hammer, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo spoke candidly about their bandmate Hetfield and his decision to enter rehab last fall to deal with addiction issues. It came as a surprise to both the band and fans, as concert dates and festival appearances were moved to accommodate Hetfield’s schedule and give him the proper space for recovery. “We really didn’t see it coming,” Trujillo said. “James seemed like he was fine, but then you look back and you try to analyze the situation over time and see ...

Artist of the Month Awich on Tupac, Condensed Milk, and the Death of Her Husband

Artist of the Month is an accolade we award to an up-and-coming artist who we believe is about to break out. In August, we watch as Awich explores the human impulses that extend across cultures. When Awich speaks, her voice is like a passport stamped with all the places she’s lived. Her vowels carry a whiff of subtropical winds while her vocabulary is warmed with American slang, picked up from college and her American husband. Words were her “earliest obsession,” she says; her first source of joy and last line of defense. Born Akiko Urasaki on December 16th, 1986, she grew up on the island of Okinawa, Japan, in the shadow of US military bases. Her family lore is steeped in the trauma of World War II and the Battle of Okinawa. As a girl, a jet crashed into her mother’s school, and when her ...

Metallica Share ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ Clip From S&M2

Metallica shared a version of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” today (Aug. 20) from their upcoming S&M2 (Symphony and Metallica²) concert film, which is due out Aug. 28. The nearly five-minute version of the song, which originally appeared on 1984’s Ride the Lightning, sees singer/guitarist James Hetfield leading the crowd in a sing-along while San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the orchestra and its xylophone players get after it. The film’s trailer and two previous songs, “All Within My Hand” and “Nothing Else Matters,” are here. S&M2 will feature 20 songs for more than two-and-a-half hours of music, recorded during a two-night stand in September 2019 at San Francisco’s  Chase Center. The concert film had a one-night-only theatr...

Quadrivium, a Synth Controlled with Data from the Moon, is Out of This World

Modern producers know that the modular synthesizer plugins of the world today can create some pretty far-out sounds. Perhaps no one knows better than Giorgio Sancristoforo, the mastermind behind synth plugins such as Decoder/Encoder and Substantia. The creator is now putting forth his latest work, Quadrivium, and it might just be his most stellar offering to date.  Quadrivium’s modulation is driven by data from the moons of our solar system’s gas giant planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Parameters within the synth, like the filter cutoff, ring modulator, reverb, and tape stop can be modulated using the data, providing some very unique and interesting sounds.  Sancristoforo says that the data collected from the moons will span a ten-year period—from 2020 to...
