The Sex Pistols famously called out Queen Elizabeth II as “not a human being” and the enabler of “a fascist regime” on their 1977 song “God Save the Queen,” but at least one member of the legendary punk group seems to have mellowed about the subject with age. Singer John Lydon posted a respectful message on Twitter following Elizabeth’s death yesterday at age 96, writing, “Rest in Peace Queen Elizabeth II. Send her victorious.” The message included a portrait of the Queen that had previously been pasted over with words on the “God Save the Queen” cover art back in the ’70s. When your primary band has released 20 studio albums in 12 years (with three more to come in the next six weeks), it seems a bit preposterous to also have a side project with five albums and two EPs of its own. Such is the state of affairs for ever-prolific King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard multi-instrumentalists Ambrose Kenny-Smith and Cook Craig, whose sixth album with the Murlocs, Rapscallion, arrives Sept. 16 on ATO Records. For those of us who can barely remain functioning members of the human race on a daily basis, this level of output is, well, staggering. For Kenny-Smith and Craig, it’s basically just business as usual. “I feel like they’re way different bands inherently, because they’re set up differently,” Craig says when asked how he keeps all this music straight in his own hea...
Fresh off performing in London with his Foo Fighters bandmates for the first time since drummer Taylor Hawkins’ death, guitarist Chris Shiflett has released his second solo single in recent weeks, “Born & Raised.” The track offers up a big dose of Nashville twang thanks to contributions from crack Music City players such as bassist Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs), drummer Julian Doro (Eagles Of Death Metal), keyboardist Mike Webb and steel guitarist Luke Schneider. [embedded content][embedded content] Produced by four-time Grammy winner Vance Powell, “Born & Raised” was recorded in March 2021 just as the first COVID-19 vaccines were becoming available. “I hadn’t done much traveling post-COVID lockdown, so I was a little nervous heading out there to work with a producer and roomful o...
Origins is our recurring feature series that provides artists a platform to dive into everything that inspired their latest release. Today, Adam Melchor takes us through “I’m Ready.” Adam Melchor has returned with “I’m Ready,” the latest single from his upcoming debut album Here Goes Nothing!, on Friday, September 9th. The dreamy indie-folk tune doubles down on Melchor’s knack for warm harmonies and frames him as wholeheartedly in love. As soon as the inviting, ocean-like ambiance introduces the tune, the tone of the song is immediately obvious. Before Melchor even utters the first line, you know it’s a love song. The instrumentation, with its finger-picked acoustic guitar and chime embellishments, simply feels like love incarnate. So, it comes as no surprise when Melchor proceed...

“I wanna get lit, i want to get drunk…Tonight is Friday, I wanna get turnt up,” Bad Boy Timz’ mid-tempo vocals start the song with a searing groove. The energy from Bella Shmurda midway into the groove is also a perfect match for the bop. If ever one imagined what a duet between these two pop stars would sound like, then the just-released euphoric record dubbed, Vibration, is a perfect summit of anticipation. Vibration, the brainchild of Nigeria’s first celebrity hype businessman, Jerry Shaffer, is another fine addition to the litany of hype-infused records in Nigeria. Arguably the perfect summer closing bop, the jam is Jerry Shaffer’s first official release for the year 2022. The Afghan Whigs are better now than they’ve ever been. The last decade of the band’s output, 2014’s Do to the Beast and three years later, In Spades, and, now, How Do You Burn?, reflect a streak unmatched by any other period in their storied, 35-year career. Like The Empire Strikes Back, The Afghan Whigs 2.0 is the rare sequel that outshines the original. This success is due in large part to the continual evolution, constant collaboration, and relentless experimentation of singer/songwriter Greg Dulli. “I really like the now,” Dulli tells SPIN over the phone. “I change so much over a year or two about what gets me off.” Dulli’s career has been defined by perpetual motion. Musically, he’s never stopped hurtling forward, always searching for what’s new and exciting to him. He’s never really...
