Jace Allen has simple goals. “I think for us to survive and thrive as a country, we need to not look inward, but outward,” he explains to SPIN. The singer-songwriter, whose new album, Taking Sides, was released on July 21, makes music with a purpose. But this isn’t purpose in the sense of making songs about important causes — which he does — but purpose in the sense of using the money he makes from recording his music to help raise funds and awareness for causes that actively make lives better. While Allen’s passion has been criminal justice reform, he found a unique opportunity to add another cause to support on Taking Sides: the victims of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Taking Sides begins with “Hail Federate,” which initially wasn’t set to be featured on the album at all. Allen was putti...
Alexander Chee’s blurb on the back of Isaac Fitzgerald’s recently published bestselling memoir, Dirtbag, Massachusetts, reads: “He’s a ringleader for the circus in the House of Love.” And after reading this book, I think most people would agree that Isaac Fitzgerald is certainly at least that, and then some. Dirtbag, Massachusetts is a memoir-in-essays about how a lost soul with a diamond heart manages to figure out — after a series of jet-fueled, drug-addled escapades — how to put together a life out of all the pieces left in the wreckage of his past. That past spans living in the Catholic Worker’s homeless shelter in Boston, to living and working in the bars of San Francisco at the onset of the AIDS pandemic, to acting in a few porn flicks, and to round things out, Fitzgerald spent time ...
Netflix is officially rebooting the cult favorite reality TV series The Mole, based on the Belgian format created by Bart De Pauw, Michel Vanhove, Michiel Devlieger and Tom Lenaerts. The new version of the show will see one player, dubbed the “mole,” try and sabotage the other 11 players that are working together to complete a series of challenges. Each challenge completed will add money to the prize pot, however the money will only be won by one player. Chris Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Wes Dening, Rikkie Proost, David Tibballs and David Burris serve as the Netflix show’s executive producers. The original show premiered in 2001 on ABC with Anderson Cooper...
While many might be attracted to Netflix‘s upcoming ad-supported subscription tier due to its supposedly more affordable pricing, it now appears that there are more restrictions to it than the company has revealed so far. In a new report from Bloomberg, app developer Steve Moser found code embedded within the Netflix iPhone app that seemingly blocks users from downloading shows and movies for offline viewing. Limiting the feature could be a significant factor for new users, especially when you’re hoping to watch something while there’s no reception, perhaps during flights or in certain subway systems. Moser also found that you won’t be able to access playback controls during ads either, meaning there’s no way to skip them. The revelation comes shortly after Netflix’s co-CEO and chief ...
We wouldn’t dare be the ones to tell Kanye West if his Yeezy designs were trash, but it sure does look like he’s asking for it. Nonetheless, the rapper has defended the clothing display for his new Yeezy Gap line, wherein piles of ill-fitting neutrals were sheepishly tossed together in what appears to be literal garbage bags. Ye received a fair amount of backlash for the trash bag display — which he emphasized were actually construction bags — and was accused of mocking homeless people. Fittingly enough, he went on the air with Fox News to explain his thought process behind the display. “Look man, I’m an innovator, and I’m not here to sit up and apologize about my ideas,” Ye said from the Times Square Gap store, adding that his goal was to make fashion more accessible and informal. “T...

Rick Ross won’t be getting a “World’s Best Boss” mug from employees of five Wingstop locations in Mississippi operated by his business entity Boss Wings Enterprises LLC. The company has been forced to pay more than $100,000 by the US Department of Labor over violations including child labor regulations. Investigators found that the rapper’s company illegally made employees pay for uniforms and cash register shortages, which caused the affected employees’ hourly wages to fall below the federal minimum wage of $7.25. They also cited overtime violations in which deductions for safety training and background checks led to employees being paid at overtime rates lower than federal law requirements. The Department of Labor also discovered that a 15-year-old employee was allowed to work past ...
Patrick Flynn could teach people a thing or two about being in a band. After his initial run with 2000s Boston hardcore mainstays Have Heart, Flynn picked up the microphone again in 2014, this time for one of the best bands on the planet, Fiddlehead. But Flynn could also teach people a thing or two about history. For that matter, he actually does teach plenty of teenagers about it as a high school history teacher. It works out for the vocalist, as his Fiddlehead bandmates are content to primarily tour weekends and school breaks, and his colleagues and students are fairly understanding about his summer job not exactly being like everyone else’s. SPIN spoke with the frontman about how he balances life between the stage and the classroom, the similarities and differences between lyrics and le...
