Over the past decade and a half, Disney has managed to build the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a multi-billion dollar franchise with a massive global following while Warner Bros. struggled to keep its DC Extended Universe coherent and engaging, but the latter media giant’s CEO David Zaslav says that that’s about to change. During the company’s latest earnings call, Zaslav reassured both fans and Wall Street that the studio is hoping to emulate the success of Marvel Studios with its own decade-long roadmap and a dedicated team behind it. “You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman — these are brands that are known everywhere in the world,” the executive emphasized. “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team...

Giancarlo Esposito confirmed that he has spoken to Marvel executives and is hoping to portray Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to ComicBook, the revered actor shared his admiration of Marvel to the TikTok account @countdowncitygeeks as he subtly revealed that he’s had a meeting with the studio. “So, I have not worked for Marvel yet,” he said. “I’ve been in a room with them and talked with them, and to answer your question, I think what they do is on the lines of that mythological journey that Joe Campbell talked about, who happened to be a friend of George Lucas that George Lucas put into his stories. They do the same thing.” Esposito continued that out of all the casting rumors involving Magneto, Dr. Freeze and Professor X, he would love to play the X-Men staple. “P...
James Gavin already has three acclaimed biographies to his credit, books about Lena Horne and Peggy Lee, and his Chet Baker book, Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, was translated into more than a dozen languages. George Michael: A Life is the writer’s most intimate biography of all, and, he told me, the most difficult to finish. “The George Michael book has a much more widespread, strong interest than anything I’ve written before.” Gavin says he’s drawn to “stories of people in pain and people struggling and taking all of that turbulence and translating it into beautiful art.” With George Michael, Gavin portrays a talented artist, full of fear, and someone who’d built a cage for himself. And yet, his music was almost the antithesis of that—with seemingly coded lyrics tha...
James Morosini’s I Love My Dad, which won both the audience and Grand Jury Award at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, is a masterclass in cringe comedy. Morosini stars as Franklin, a troubled young man fresh off a suicide attempt. His father, Chuck, played with an incautious tenacity by Patton Oswalt, has been desperately trying to get a hold of him. We are first introduced to Chuck via a series of pathetic voice messages to his son. Chuck is a deadbeat. He might mean well, but the man seems to lack even the most basic skills of parenting. Rule numero uno: show up. Establishing his boundaries, Franklin blocks his father across the social media board. And that’s when the fun (a relative term) begins. Totally misunderstanding an anecdote told to him by a coworker (played by Lil Rel Howery), ...
