YouTube Shorts Throws Down Challenge to TikTok, Hits 1.5B Monthly Viewers

As YouTube’s short-form video platform gains momentum against competitors like TikTok and Reels, more than 1.5 billion users view Shorts content every month, the company said on Wednesday. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai last shared in April that YouTube had 2 billion logged-in users each month, while YouTube Shorts averaged more than 30 billion daily views. The Shorts monthly viewership figures come in contrast to TikTok, which said it surpassed 1 billion monthly active users last September. The YouTube figures account for logged-in users who have viewed at least one Shorts video on the platform in the span of a month, which doesn’t necessarily differentiate between users who are intentionally seeking out Shorts videos or those who accidentally happen upon them when using YouTube. According to...

Father John Misty Releases Lana Del Rey’s “Buddy’s Rendezvous” Cover: Listen

“Buddy’s Rendezvous” is a world unto itself. It is a place out of time. My dream for the video is that it would surrender itself to the power of the song. An unnamed man (played by Craig Stark), fresh out of jail and down on his luck makes his way across the fractured landscape of Los Angeles to meet his daughter (played by Arrow DeWilde). All the while he is beset by memories of a more innocent time. Despite her hesitance, his daughter and her boyfriend (played by Gilbert Trejo) agree to meet her father and find moments of sadness and sparks of tenderness in the connection made. Although the video and the song can be considered love letters to Los Angeles, the themes are universal. Disappointments, regrets, forgiveness, tenderness, perseverance, and love. The incredible performances by Ar...

Here’s Why Tim Allen Did Not Voice Buzz in ‘Lightyear’

With Lightyear making a premiere on the 17th, many fans that grew up with the franchise and animated characters are wondering why Tim Allen was not called upon for his work as Buzz. Landing the role as the voice of the Space Ranger back in 1995 with the original Toy Story, and spanning into numerous works with the IP up until the more recent Toy Story 4 in 2019 — that’s almost 25 years — many were left scratching their heads when it was announced that Chris Evans would be voicing the younger Buzz in Lightyear. The slight unrest comes from Allen’s deep association with the character, tied with the fact that, unlike a traditional film (outside of reboots and Easter eggs) where actors can no longer uphold the character’s image due to physical factors like aging, no one really had the need to ...

Warner Bros. Shares First Look at Ryan Gosling as Ken in ‘Barbie’ Film

Warner Bros. has unveiled a first look at Ryan Gosling as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film. The image sees the Canadian actor sporting Ken’s distinct blonde hair, spray tan and six-pack abs, wearing a denim vest with cut-off sleeves, denim bottoms and underwear that features a personalized band that reads his name. Gosling can be seen leaning against a pink pillar that matches a big structure in the back, assuming to be Barbie’s beach house. In late April, the studio also shared a first look at Margot Robbie as the titular character, where she can be seen in her convertible with a summer outfit and a big smile on her face. Despite sharing the images, plot details still remain under wraps as of writing. Joining Gosling and Robbie in the supporting cast, however, are America Ferrera, Simu L...

Perfume Genius: Ugly Season

The collision between acoustic instrumentation and crackerjack production makes for a lush and widescreen experience. Mills’ harmonium on “Herem” bubbles with dread from the song’s swirling brew before programmed drums carry the arrangement to a cathartic finish; clarinet swells offer an immense moment of bliss on “Teeth”; Hadreas’ sighing vocals on “Pop Song” turn to playful coos when chimes and percussion bang into the mix. Compared to previous albums, such rousing peaks are less immediate, on tracks that stretch past the seven-minute mark and leave choruses in the dust. Spend time with this music, though, and its glimmers of hooky beauty leave a profound impression, like watching a peacock preen and flash its magnificent plumage for a moment at a time. At points, Ugly Season reminds me ...
