Court Stenographer for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Trial Saw “Jurors Dozing Off”

While the trial for Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard seemed to completely consume the American pop culture conversation during its six-week proceedings, the case was not compelling enough to hold the attention of the actual jurors deliberating it. In an interview with Law & Crime Network, which livestreamed the entire trial, the court-appointed stenographer Judy Bellinger revealed what the multi-camera set-up evidently did not capture: “There were a few jurors dozing off… It was tough,” she said. “There was a lot of video deposition and they’d just sit there and all of a sudden I’d see their heads drop.” Bellinger began by her sharing her perspective on the jury selection process before acknowledging potential, arguably more deserving, a...

Miles Bridges Claims He Was Drinking Pink Lemonade & Not Lean, Twitter Not Convinced

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Todd Kirkland / Getty Miles Bridges, like many a young NBA player in the offseason, is enjoying the time off and probably isn’t sticking to tight diet restrictions. A photo that the Charlotte Hornets star posted suggested he was sipping lean, but he claims that the drink was pink lemonade. Miles Bridges Has Some Explaining To Do Bridges, 24, is one of the best young players in the league and had his best scoring average this past season with the Hornets. What has Twitter buzzing at the moment is an image Bridges reportedly posted to his Instagram story featuring the pink drink in a styrofoam cup paired with a joint. In perhaps a last-ditch effort to not create a PR nightmare, Bridges tweeted and deleted “Pink Lemonade” with an upside-down smiling em...

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Lionel Hahn / Getty In case you haven’t been paying attention, now former celebrity couple Michael B. Jordan and Lori Harvey have called it quits. To make sure things are official, it seems that the latter has wiped all traces of the renowned actor from her Instagram account. Cold world. Hot girl summer is officially on, at least for Harvey, and social media has taken note of the petty. Or the refocus depending on whose side you’re on in this debacle. It’s worth noting most everyone actually has no personal stake in this jib. The couple had been together for over a year, so that’s something. Harvey’s father, Steve Harvey, confirmed the split on his radio show. But as we mentioned, the deal was sealed when all the pics of Jordan that used to be on Lo...

Doll Spirit Vessel Will Be Your New Favorite Band

When Doll Spirit Vessel played one of its first shows at buzzing Brooklyn DIY venue Rubulad in March, the band quickly captivated the attention of the crowded room. Sandwiched in an eclectic lineup of punk headliners My Son, The Doctor, alt-country band Drug Couple, and glam-folk indie rock act Matthew Danger Lippman, most in the audience had no idea what they were in for. Doll Spirit Vessel stood out with the gentlest set, quickly making new fans who approached them post-set, remarking on that attention-grabbing first impression. Bandleader Kati Malison (rhymes with caddy) has a stunning voice that draws you in immediately, pairing just as well with the gentle instrumentations as it does with the band’s more raucous moments. At the time, the band was billed under Malison’s name, with her ...

Nabil Ayers Searches for Identity, Explores Race and Family in His New Memoir

Nabil Ayers has always been surrounded by music. He played drums in Seattle indie rock band  The Long Winters, co-founded Seattle’s Sonic Boom Records, and is currently the U.S. president of the Beggars Group, which distributes 4AD, Rough Trade Records, Matador Records, XL Recordings, and Young. It’s his last name, however, that has always attracted attention. In his memoir, My Life in the Sunshine: Searching for My Father and Discovering My Family, Ayers traces his unorthodox upbringing. His mother, Louise Braufman, met and had a child with jazz musician Roy Ayers — with the understanding that he would never have to be involved in his son’s life. The younger Ayers chronicles impersonal meetings with his father, like watching him at a show in Massachusetts, sharing an uncomfortable en...

St. Paul & The Broken Bones Dive Bomb Into The Psychedelic on The Alien Coast

Paul Janeway never wanted to be in a band that had his name in it. But his friend and co-founder of St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Jesse Phillips, changed all that. “I grew up singing in church since I was four years old,” Janeway said during an interview ahead of the band’s recent show at Pappy & Harriet’s. When Paul and Jesse and met, the frontman was pretty innocent, except for a potty mouth that had him quipping he was “baptized with my mouth closed.” That initial innocence led to the nickname of “Saint Paul” — and the rest is history. “Jesse thought it would be funny to call me St. Paul — I didn’t really want my name in the band — and then the first song we ever wrote together was a song called “Broken Bones And Pocket Change.” The band grew from Janeway on vocals and Phillips o...

The following acts released quality albums in May 2022 alone: Radiohead off-shoot The Smile, Kendrick Lamar, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Sharon Van Etten, The Black Keys, Florence + the Machine, Harry Styles — we’ll stop there for space reasons. It’s been such a wild music year so far, only some of them made the following list. Maybe 2022 was just front-loaded and the final six months will be less eventful. (Judging by the release calendar, that’s probably a bad prediction.) Either way, we had trouble even narrowing this down to 30. Let’s meet back here at year’s end and see how things shake out. 30. Caracara – New Preoccupations Fans of classic 2000s emo — Say Anything, Dashboard Confessional, or Circa Survive, for example — are sure to find something to love in Caracara’s New Preoccupations (and...

Drake Reportedly Wrote His Verse in ”Churchill Downs” in 11 Minutes

Lil Yachty has claimed that Drake wrote his entire verse for Jack Harlow‘s “Churchill Downs” in just 11 minutes. During an episode of Off the Record, Yachty told DJ Akademiks that Drizzy talked to him about the verse in the song. He claims that Drake “said he did that shit in like 11 minutes. He said he did that in front of Jack. That verse, he told me that … They did it when they were out there in the islands. He did it right in front of him.” Yachty claims he’s more impressed that the verse is two minutes long. Recently, a viral video surfaced online of Harlow looking over Drake’s shoulder and the Atlanta rapper shared that it might be taken from when Drizzy started writing his verse.
