One of the forefathers of tropical-inspired electronic music has returned with a bold new direction and the same feel-good energy. It’s a best-of-both-worlds scenario as longtime fans of Thomas Jack re-embrace the Australian producer following a four-year hiatus. Jack’s career certainly wasn’t one you’d up and leave behind without good reason. The pioneering “Rivers” producer is widely credited with having had a role in coining the term “tropical house” after a friend jokingly suggested he adopt the terminology based on how his music sounded. That’s because his music channeled the exotic sounds of summer across the world. Uplifting and carefree, Jack’s music was breezy, light and distinct in its employment of eclectic ...

With an increasingly boundless list of accolades and the talent and work ethic to back it up, Wax Motif is carving his own path in the music world. And ...
Quality Control (QC) signee and emerging rap artist Lakeyah has dropped a new track featuring Latto titled “Mind Yo Business.” Gliding over the high-octane beat and horns, the Milwaukee-born artist spits about her expectations. “Bad bitch gon’ shop, no gimmicks / Brand new drop-top, not rented / And every time a bitch start, I finish / If it ain’t money in the text, don’t send it.” Dressed in pink with matching ostrich feathers and multicolored Emilio Pucci, the music video showcases Lakeyah and Latto laying down their verses in a pristinely manicured hedge maze. Matching Lakeyah’s energy, Latto says, “Bitches twice my age, but ain’t half his pay / If he ain’t getting more than me, then he ain’t get no play / Only business that I mind, is the one that pay / My kids, kids gon’ have they way...
By Mia Hughes “You never can say whether or not your music is timely, but I think sometimes, music needs to be a catalyst for people’s awareness,” says Kentucky songwriter S.G. Goodman. She’s telling MTV News about “Work Until I Die,” a cut from her newest album, Teeth Marks. “Trapped in the rhythm, you’ll work until you die,” she sings with her unmistakable drawl. The track, which she developed with long-time collaborator Matt Rowan, has country roots with a punk bite, like Fugazi doing Woody Guthrie. Goodman was inspired by the union songwriting of Florence Reece’s 1930s anthem “Which Side Are You On?,” yet it’s delivered with the singalong sensibilities of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” All said, it’s a classic Southern protest song, delivered at a moment when it’s sorely needed. “I graduated...
